On Monday, President Donald Trump officially opened a new helicopter landing pad at the White House, aiming to shift focus from ongoing disputes regarding media coverage. The ceremony was marked by Trump cutting a red, white and blue ribbon using oversized gold scissors and greeting officials wearing hard hats and green construction attire before boarding Marine One for his flight to New York.

This inauguration occurred shortly after major television networks, including CNN, chose not to cover the event due to Trump’s announcement that they would be barred from reporting. Trump’s actions have escalated tensions over media access, a recurring theme during his presidency, as he often attempts to restrict coverage he finds unfavourable.

Media Outcry and Legal Controversy

The decision to exclude specific networks from the event prompted MS Now, Politico, and CNN to file a lawsuit against the Trump administration following the president’s Friday announcement. While CNN typically participates in a rotation with four other networks for pooled coverage of White House events, its absence led ABC, CBS, and Fox News to collectively decide not to cover the ceremony, a rare occurrence in journalism.

President Trump has indicated that the helipad, which features robust granite, is designed for longevity, claiming it will have a “million-year life.” He has also expressed a desire for the large insignia of the “Seal of the President of the United States” to impress Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is scheduled for a state visit on Wednesday.

However, the ongoing media dispute has diverted attention from both the helipad and the upcoming visit. Trump’s plans to utilise the helipad for transport to Joint Base Andrews and onward to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which begins on Tuesday, have also been overshadowed by these tensions. As he approached Marine One for departure, the noise from the helicopter prevented him from responding to questions from the press.

Details of the Helipad Construction Project

Construction on the helipad commenced in June, with Trump opting for high-quality materials, including black granite to replace original Tennessee flagstone along the West Wing colonnade. In addition, he renovated the traditional walkway at the White House’s diplomatic entrance with white granite and refurbished parts of the surrounding asphalt driveway.

With Xi’s visit approaching, Trump has urged prompt completion of the project, which he believes will leave a favourable impression on visiting dignitaries. It is noted that Marine One is currently the only helicopter allowed to land closely at the White House premises, necessitating the upgrade due to new, more powerful helicopters replacing the older Vietnam War-era models, which could potentially damage the lawn.

In July, Trump outlined that the privately funded project would cost up to $6 million, although further enhancements, such as levelling the ground around the helipad, are also expected. The total expenses related to the project remain uncertain as further modifications are anticipated.
