In a horrifying incident in West Tripura district, a woman allegedly poured acid on her husband while riding pillion on his motorcycle. The attack occurred near Chandpur on Wednesday, prompting a swift response from local villagers and the police.

Husband Screams as Wife Pours Acid on him

The victim, identified as Shibaji Debbarma, a farmer by profession, was riding his motorcycle with his wife, Sumitra Debbarma, seated behind him. According to police reports, while they were on their way to Chandpur, Sumitra suddenly poured acid on his face and neck. Overcome with intense pain, Shibaji stopped the bike and got off, screaming for help.

As the situation escalated, Sumitra allegedly attempted to pour more acid on her husband. However, villagers who heard the screams rushed to the scene and intervened, preventing further harm. The injured man was promptly taken to the GBP Hospital in Agartala, where he is currently being treated for facial and neck burns. Doctors have confirmed that his condition is stable.

Police Suspect Domestic Violence

Himadri Sarkar, Officer-in-Charge of Sidhai Police Station, stated that preliminary investigations suggest Sumitra Debbarma may have been a victim of domestic violence, which could have led her to carry out the acid attack. However, the exact motive is yet to be confirmed, pending a formal complaint and further inquiry.

“As of now, the victim has not lodged an official complaint. He is undergoing treatment, and we are keeping a close watch on the case,” Sarkar said.

Statement of Police

“Shibaji Debbarma, along with his wife Sumitra Debbarma, was travelling towards Chandpur on his bike on Wednesday. Suddenly, Sumitra poured acid on her husband. He stopped the bike and got down due to severe pain,” said Himadri Sarkar, Officer in Charge (OC) of Sidhai police station.

“Unaware what had happened, he started screaming for help. His wife again tried to pour more acid on him but could not as the villagers rushed in. The man was immediately shifted to the GBP hospital,” he said.

“No formal complaint has been received from the victim yet, as he is undergoing treatment. We are closely monitoring the incident. We carried out a search, and it appears the woman was absconding after the acid attack”, he said.

Accused Wife on the Run

Police have launched a search operation for the accused, who is currently absconding. Authorities are tracking leads to locate her, while also awaiting any statements from the victim once he is medically stable.

The case has shocked the local community and raised concerns about both domestic abuse and the increasing reports of acid-related violence in the region. Law enforcement agencies have also urged anyone with information on the accused’s whereabouts to come forward.
