The CSR Journal Magazine

Abhishek Banerjee, a Member of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress, has extended his festive greetings on the occasion of Dol and Holi. In a recent post on ‘X’, he underscored the significance of these festivals, referring to their vibrant essence and the important lessons they convey. Banerjee noted that both Dol Yatra and Holi arrive each year as symbols adorned with “colour in their hands,” carrying a timeless message of unity. He expressed that the festivals serve as a reminder of India’s greatest strengths – its unity and harmony.

According to Banerjee, the celebration of colours transcends individual identities, regardless of one’s name, caste, language, or faith. “When colour touches us, it does not pause to inquire about our backgrounds; it simply envelops all,” he stated. He emphasized that a community truly flourishes when every hue is respected and upheld with dignity. “The spirit of Dol Yatra and Holi teaches us that unity is our greatest strength, and harmony should be our collective duty,” he added in his message, urging people to embrace the joy these festivals bring.

Encouragement for Togetherness and Equality

In his message, Banerjee also expressed hope that the festivities would reinforce a sense of togetherness, fairness, and the notion that every individual deserves equal rights in society. “May this festival renew our faith in unity, fairness, and the belief that every citizen deserves equal space under the same sky,” he conveyed as he wished everyone a colourful Dol and a joyous Holi.

Community Celebrations in South Kolkata

In South Kolkata, the festive spirit was palpable as communities came together to celebrate Dol Utsav, showcasing a blend of traditional music, dance, and performances including Rabindra Sangeet. These celebrations reflected the cultural richness associated with the occasion, featuring various forms of artistic expression that embody the essence of the festivals.

Dol Jatra and Holi: Cultural Significance

Dol Jatra, known by different names such as Dol Purnima and Dol Utsav, is predominantly celebrated in West Bengal and extends to other Eastern states like Odisha and Assam. Marking the onset of spring, Holi, often referred to as the Spring Festival, signifies the arrival of both spring and the harvest season. The festival is deeply entrenched in Hindu mythology, symbolizing the victory of good over evil and encouraging social bonding through shared celebrations.
