The recent heavy rainfall in Kerala has resulted in three confirmed deaths and significant disruptions across various regions. Officials indicated that landslides and flooding were particularly severe in the districts of Idukki and Kottayam, prompting rescue efforts in multiple locations.

In addition to Idukki and Kottayam, reports of rain-related incidents emerged from Pathanamthitta, Kollam, Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Palakkad. The India Meteorological Department has indicated that further heavy rains can be anticipated, leading authorities to remain vigilant and proactive in their emergency response efforts.

As a precaution, several educational institutions in affected districts have been closed. Rescue teams are on alert across vulnerable areas in preparation for additional flooding and landslides as conditions worsen.

Fatal Incidents in Idukki and Kottayam

In Idukki, the death of a local woman, identified as Sumathi from Adoormala, was reported after her home was struck by debris from a landslide during the early hours of Saturday. Neighbours managed to rescue her husband and son, who were taken to a hospital in Thodupuzha for treatment of their injuries. The search and recovery operations involving the National Disaster Response Force and local authorities eventually led to the recovery of Sumathi’s body.

Kottayam district reported another tragic incident where a young man, Joseph, was killed in a landslide at Payyanithottam. Although he was rescued from the immediate danger, Joseph succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital. His mother is reportedly still trapped beneath the landslide’s debris, with ongoing efforts to locate her.

A further casualty occurred in Vagamon, Idukki, where Prabhakaran Nair, a resident of Vaikom in Kottayam, died when a landslide struck a relative’s house while he was sleeping. The extensive search operations continued for several hours until his body was recovered.

Infrastructure Damage and Ongoing Efforts

In Idukki, landslides have caused widespread damage, including blocked roads and submerged areas due to overflowing rivers. The Pullakayar River has notably inundated the Kokkayar low-level crossing, displacing families from approximately six homes. Local authorities have alerted residents and opened the shutters of nearby minor dams to manage water levels.

In Kottayam, the impact of heavy rainfall has led to significant flooding in towns such as Erattupetta, Kanjirappally, Koottickal, and Erumeli, severely disrupting traffic and prompting extensive evacuation efforts. Many residents found themselves stranded due to rising water levels, necessitating assistance from local rescue teams.

In Pathanamthitta, further landslides have occurred in the hilly regions, with reportings of flooding in Ranni and surrounding areas. Local officials have alerted citizens to be cautious due to rising river levels, urging people to evacuate to higher ground. Relief camps have been established to assist those in need in the affected districts.

Throughout Kerala, heavy rain has also resulted in minor landslides and flooding in Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Palakkad districts, as some fishermen were rescued from stranded boats amid tumultuous sea conditions. The red alert issued by the IMD indicates the seriousness of the situation and underscores the potential risks associated with continued rain and flooding.
