Telangana Woman Abducted By Parents From Husband’s Home For Marrying Against Wishes

The CSR Journal Magazine

A young woman in Telangana who had married against her parents’ wishes was allegedly taken away by her family from her in-laws’ house, in Hyderabad’s Narsampally village on Wednesday. Police said the incident, which has sparked outrage after a video went viral on social media, has led to a kidnap case being registered against the woman’s parents and relatives.

Dramatic Scenes Caught on Camera

According to Keesara police officials, the woman had tied the knot with her partner four months ago despite objections from her family. The resistance was not rooted in caste differences, as both families belong to the same caste and are even distantly related. Instead, her parents reportedly opposed the marriage because they felt the groom “did not have a proper career” and could not provide a stable future.

After living at her in-laws’ residence, the couple was confronted on Wednesday by the woman’s parents and four other relatives. During the heated altercation, the woman was allegedly dragged out of the house and forced into a car against her will. In the scuffle, the husband and his family said they were beaten and chilli powder was thrown at them to prevent them from resisting.

A video filmed by locals shows the young woman screaming for help as neighbours tried to intervene. Despite her cries, her parents appeared determined, physically pulling her away even as onlookers called for police help. The footage quickly spread online, triggering sharp discussions about honour, parental control, and the rights of women.

Police Register Kidnapping Case

The Keesara police station confirmed that a case of kidnapping has been registered against the woman’s parents and four other family members. “We have taken note of the video and the statements given by the husband’s family. A detailed investigation is under way,” a police official said. The parents, however, maintained that their daughter had come with them willingly and was “safe at home.”

On Thursday morning, the woman reportedly contacted the police and informed them that she was with her father and would appear at the police station to record her statement. Officers have stated that her version will be crucial in determining whether she left voluntarily or under force.

Family Honour vs Women’s Choices

The incident has yet again brought into focus the continuing tension between traditional parental authority and individual choice, especially in matters of marriage. Despite legal provisions safeguarding the right of adults to marry by consent, families often oppose unions on grounds ranging from caste identities to financial stability.

Activists argue that such cases underscore how social pressures often override personal freedom. “What we saw in this video is shocking, but not uncommon. Families still believe they can control the decisions of adult children in the name of honour and reputation,” said a Hyderabad-based women’s rights advocate.

For the young bride and groom, the days ahead will remain uncertain as the police proceed with inquiries. The viral video, however, has already stirred public opinion, with many demanding strict action against the use of violence and intimidation in matters of personal choice.
