Technical Glitch Disrupts Flight Operations at Delhi and Mumbai Airports

The CSR Journal Magazine

A technical failure in the Navitaire system, utilized by airlines for bookings and check-ins, significantly affected operations at major airports in India on Thursday. The glitch, which began at approximately 6:45 am at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, lasted for about 45 minutes, leading to substantial delays and long queues as airlines resorted to manual processing of passenger details. The issue was rectified by 7:30 am. Various airlines, including IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express, experienced disruptions.

At Delhi airport, the rapid onset of the glitch caught many travelers off guard during peak morning hours. The inability of airlines to access their systems effectively led to an increase in wait times as staff worked to manage the flow of passengers manually. According to sources, IndiGo was able to restore its operations in around 25 minutes, but the widespread impact of the outage created a backlog that extended well beyond the system’s recovery.

Similar Delays Reported at Mumbai Airport

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai was not insulated from the effects of the Navitaire outage. Passengers at the airport also reported significant delays at check-in counters, compounding the frustrations of those intending to travel. Travelers expressed concerns over the crowding, as staff struggled to cope with the influx of passengers during the time the system was down.

Navitaire, known for providing essential technology in the airline industry, plays a critical role in handling reservations, check-ins, and boarding processes. When the system is compromised, airlines face challenges that hinder their ability to efficiently process passenger movements, resulting in a ripple effect on flight schedules and overall airport operations.

Historical Context of System Outages

This incident is reminiscent of a notable disruption that occurred in November of the previous year, when a technical issue in the Air Traffic Control system at Delhi airport caused delays for over 800 flights. Such experiences highlight ongoing vulnerabilities in critical aviation technology, raising concerns among passengers and industry professionals alike.

Delhi airport, recognized as the busiest in India, accommodates over 1,500 flight movements each day. Conversely, Mumbai airport also plays a crucial role in the national aviation landscape, managing approximately 1,000 flight movements daily. The operational challenges brought on by the Navitaire outage have once again spotlighted the reliance of Indian airports on advanced technology for seamless travel experiences.
