Tasleema Akhter Condemns Violence Against Civilians in PoJK, Calls for Global Action on Rights Abuses

The CSR Journal Magazine

Human rights defender Tasleema Akhter has strongly denounced the alleged violence and excessive use of force by the Pakistan Army and security forces against civilians in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). As Chairperson of the Association of Terror Victims in Kashmir (ATVK), she has called attention to the severe impact of these actions on innocent lives. In her statement, Akhter emphasised the need for global human rights organisations to advocate for the rights of those affected and to condemn these serious violations of civil liberties.

Akhter expressed her concern over the rapidly deteriorating conditions in PoJK, labelling it a scene of bloodshed. She stated, “Human rights organisations across the world must raise their voices against these grave violations and stand with the affected people.” Her statement reflects a growing anxiety about civilian safety amid escalating violence in the region.

Furthermore, she highlighted the suspension of internet services in PoJK, which she alleges is designed to silence local residents and hinder the dissemination of information to the wider world. “Pakistan must understand that people in PoJK are connected globally,” she noted, indicating that attempts to suppress the truth are likely to fail in the modern era.

Call for Recognition of Basic Rights

Akhter has voiced solidarity with the residents of PoJK, who she claims are only seeking basic rights and essential services. The demands include access to healthcare, food security, and improvements in public facilities. “The people of PoJK are asking for their fundamental rights, yet they are being met with repression. We stand firmly with them and demand justice for every victim,” she said, underscoring her commitment to their cause.

According to Akhter, the ongoing repression hampers any potential for dialogue or improvement in living conditions. She described the situation as unacceptable, urging immediate intervention to ensure that the rights and needs of the local population are met. The urgency of addressing these humanitarian concerns is central to her message.

In addition to highlighting civilian suffering, Akhter has called attention to restrictions imposed on journalists and political processes in the region. She claimed that there are efforts to silence those who speak the truth, with reports of detentions of journalists and the uncertainty of democratic processes, including elections. “Such actions are unacceptable and must be addressed immediately,” she stated, reinforcing her call for freedom of expression and press in PoJK.

International Concern and Accountability

Akhter referred to eyewitness accounts that have raised alarms about the situation, stating that alarming videos of violence have surfaced, reinforcing international concerns. “We have been in contact with eyewitnesses and have received videos showing the violence. The voices of the people cannot be ignored,” she asserted. She expressed that protests against the violence are taking place not only in PoJK but also in major cities worldwide, including London.

The activist articulated the need for the international community to acknowledge these developments and seek accountability for the alleged atrocities occurring in PoJK. Her statements aim to foster a broader understanding of the plight faced by locals and to mobilise global support for their cause.

As calls for justice and recognition of rights grow, Akhter’s efforts reflect a commitment to raising awareness about the conditions in PoJK. With her advocacy, there is hope for increased scrutiny of the situation and pressure on authorities to address human rights concerns effectively.
