A young man from Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu reportedly died following his arrest for allegedly selling liquor beyond the permitted hours. The victim, identified as Arunachalam, collapsed at a police station while in custody and was subsequently taken to a hospital where he died. His family has alleged that he was subjected to brutal treatment by police, which they claim led to his severe injuries.

According to family members, Arunachalam was assaulted by four police officers after his arrest. They expressed their belief that the injuries sustained during this time were critical enough to require urgent medical intervention. Following the incident at the police station, he was admitted to the hospital where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.

However, law enforcement authorities have strongly denied the family’s claims. They stated that Arunachalam collapsed while conversing with others in the lock-up, a moment they assert was captured on surveillance cameras. Reports from officials indicate that he was in a medically stable condition at the time of his release on bail, prior to his medical examination with family members.

Contention Over Circumstances of Death

Police officials detailed that Arunachalam was taken for an examination to the Government Medical College Hospital in Thoothukudi shortly after his arrest and was declared fit for custody. They claimed there were no visible signs of injury at that time. The police contend that following his release, he experienced a further collapse near the hospital, leading to his admission for treatment.

Despite these claims, Arunachalam’s family has adamantly rejected the police narrative. They are insisting on a thorough investigation into his death, describing it as a case of custodial homicide. The family has refused to accept his body until their demands for transparency are met, particularly regarding access to CCTV footage from the police station that they allege is being withheld.

The incident has sparked a strong political backlash, particularly from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party, which has accused the ruling government led by Chief Minister Vijay of failing to address custodial deaths adequately. DMK MP Kanimozhi expressed her distress regarding the situation, drawing attention to anguish faced by families due to alleged police brutality.

Previous Incidents Heighten Concerns Over Custodial Deaths

This incident follows closely on the heels of another reported custodial death in Nagercoil just weeks prior. In that case, a disabled man named Sabarivarman also died in judicial custody after he was reportedly assaulted by prison staff and inmates. A post-mortem examination discovered numerous injuries on his body, which prompted an investigation involving the arrest of multiple jail warders.

Historically, Tamil Nadu has faced scrutiny over incidents of custodial violence. One of the most prominent cases involves the deaths of P Jayaraj and J Bennix in 2020, which incited widespread outrage and led to legal action against officers involved. Public concern over the treatment within police custody has remained high in the state, with calls for accountability continuing to emerge.

The recent events have intensified discussions surrounding the need for reform in police practices within Tamil Nadu, highlighting the urgency for measures to prevent further occurrences of custodial death and violence. The situation remains fluid, with public attention focused on the outcome of ongoing investigations.
