The CSR Journal Magazine

In an official announcement on Sunday, Vijay, the chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), revealed his candidacy for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, set to take place on April 23, 2026. He will be contesting from the Perambur and Trichy East constituencies. Vijay emphasized the motto of his campaign, urging voters to “Vote for the whistle,” aligning it with the party’s symbol, which is a whistle. This election marks Vijay’s political debut as he transitions from being an actor to a politician.

Challenges Ahead: Competing Against Established Opponents

In the Perambur constituency, Vijay faces off against the incumbent MLA RD Shekar from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Meanwhile, in Trichy East, he will contend with DMK’s sitting MLA Inigo Irudayaraj. During a press briefing, Vijay asserted his commitment to principles of honesty and integrity, underscoring his dedication to public service. He stated that priorities after winning the elections would include ensuring women’s safety and promoting a drug-free Tamil Nadu.

TVK’s Vision for Governance and Integrity

Vijay appealed to the public to support his party and its symbol, emphasizing a governance model focused on transparency and accountability. He made promises to avoid misappropriation of public funds and highlighted plans to reinforce law and order. “This is my commitment to the people of Tamil Nadu,” he remarked. Aadhav Arjuna, the General Secretary of TVK’s Election Campaign Management, had previously indicated Vijay’s focus on one of the North Chennai constituencies, which aligns with his current choice of Perambur.

Candidate Lineup and Strategic Alliances

In addition to Vijay, the party has outlined its candidate roster for the elections. General Secretary N Anand will be contesting from T. Nagar, while Treasurer Venkat Ramanan aims for a position in Mylapore. Other TVK candidates include VS Babu in Kolathur, who will run against DMK’s MK Stalin, and Selvam vying for a seat in Chepauk against Udhayanidhi Stalin.

Vijay’s Commitment to the Common Man

Vijay articulated that TVK’s candidates reflect the true voice of the people, coming from ordinary backgrounds rather than affluent elites. He underlined the importance of integrity and commitment over mere experience, stating that an MLA should not only represent but also protect the Assembly and its constituents. “Today marks an important introduction of our dedicated candidates,” he noted, ensuring that each candidate was carefully chosen for their understanding of common struggles.

A Vision for Youth and Timely Governance

The TVK chief also outlined several election commitments aimed at supporting youth welfare. He proposed a monthly financial assistance of ₹4,000 for graduates and ₹2,000 for diploma holders. Additionally, he assured that all government examinations would be conducted punctually, without delays. Vijay’s vision focuses on creating a self-reliant Tamil Nadu free from drugs, reflecting a strategic approach to addressing current social issues.

Overview of Election Schedule and Competition

The Tamil Nadu Assembly elections will encompass 234 constituencies, and counting of votes is scheduled for May 4. The present assembly tenure concludes on May 10. The forthcoming election is anticipated to present a robust contest primarily between the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, which includes Congress and other parties, and the National Democratic Alliance led by the AIADMK, in coalition with the BJP and PMK.
