Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Announces ₹6,220 Crore Crop Loan Waiver

The CSR Journal Magazine

Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister C Vijay Joseph announced an extensive crop loan waiver scheme aimed at providing financial relief to farmers in the state. This initiative, unveiled during a session of the State Legislative Assembly, now totals ₹6,220 crore and will impact approximately 13.34 lakh farmers. This announcement comes as the Chief Minister’s administration reaches the 100-day mark, underscoring its focus on improving rural livelihoods.

During his speech in the Assembly, the Chief Minister emphasised the importance of farmers to the state’s wellbeing, stating, “If the people of Tamil Nadu are our life, then farmers are our lifeline.” He highlighted that protecting farmer livelihoods and alleviating their debt burden remains a top priority for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government.

Under the new scheme, farmers holding cooperative bank loans up to ₹75,000 will benefit from a full waiver of their debts. For loans ranging from ₹75,000 to ₹1 lakh, a waiver award of ₹75,000 is available, offering additional relief of up to ₹40,000 to 2,38,264 farmers in this bracket. Loans exceeding ₹1 lakh will receive a fixed waiver amounting to ₹35,000.

Financial Commitment to Agricultural Welfare

In his address, Chief Minister Vijay pointed out that the enhanced waiver package now adds ₹953.06 crore to the existing financial assistance, bringing the total capital allocation to ₹6,220 crore. As of July 31, ₹5,267 crore had already been transferred directly into the accounts of 13.34 lakh farmers, showcasing the government’s commitment to agricultural welfare.

The Chief Minister also traced the development of this policy, noting that just 15 days after taking office on May 25, an initial loan waiver for amounts up to ₹50,000 was established. This measure was broadened on June 19 as a result of comprehensive discussions with representatives from farmers’ associations.

Additionally, he outlined a significant shift in the administration’s approach compared to previous governments. In times past, repayments of cooperative bank dues occurred in 12 instalments over several years. In contrast, the current government has committed to fulfilling the Reserve Bank of India’s directive from November 28, 2025, which stipulates that cooperative banks should receive full reimbursement within 45 to 60 days.

Ensuring Swift Financial Relief for Farmers

Despite existing constraints within the state budget, the government has reaffirmed its dedication to absorbing the financial burdens associated with this expanded crop-loan waiver. Chief Minister Vijay assured that the government’s efforts will facilitate immediate assistance for the agricultural community in Tamil Nadu, further reinforcing the importance of farmers’ welfare in the state’s development agenda.

The commitment of the Tamil Nadu government to support its farmers has been clearly articulated through these recent financial measures. By enhancing the crop loan waiver scheme, the administration aims to address the pressing needs of farmers, fostering a more stable and secure agricultural environment.

Overall, this announcement represents a significant step towards improving the economic circumstances of farmers and aligning the government’s initiatives with the needs of the agricultural sector in Tamil Nadu.
