A fresh political flashpoint has erupted in West Bengal over Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee’s visit to New Delhi to attend a meeting of the Opposition’s INDI bloc. Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari launched a fiery attack on Banerjee, calling for strict police and intelligence surveillance on her engagements and alleging attempts to forge ties with anti-national elements.
Questioning the purpose behind the Opposition’s strategy session in the national capital, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari remarked, “What is the real objective behind this Delhi trip? She is going to confer with ‘intellectual Naxals’. Everyone is well aware of the role played by those who sponsor ‘Azadi’ slogans.” Issuing a direct appeal to law enforcement and security agencies, he added, “I urge the police and intelligence networks to keep a vigilant eye on these interactions to ensure no nexus is established with forces working against national interests. She has become a prime patron for intellectual Naxals—balancing Jamaat on one side and radical ideologues on the other.”
Adhikari’s comments also targeted Banerjee’s recent statements made at a public rally in Serampore, where she defended the use of the word ‘Azadi’, asserting that it simply translates to ‘freedom’ and shouldn’t be taboo. Rebutting her stance, Adhikari countered, “India achieved its independence in 1947. Those attempting to incite ‘Azadi’ rhetoric from within the country’s borders will face a resolute response from patriotic citizens.”

The TMC chief’s visit to New Delhi centers around a high-level meeting of the opposition INDIA alliance aimed at formulating a unified strategy against the Election Commission of India . Opposition leaders have repeatedly voiced concerns regarding alleged bias and irregularities in electoral processes, particularly surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Speaking to media persons at the Kolkata airport prior to her departure, Mamata Banerjee confirmed that the chief focus of the New Delhi meeting would be addressing the ECI’s conduct and charting a collective roadmap. Top leaders from the Congress, Left parties, and regional partners are expected to attend the discussions to finalize their joint campaign against the electoral body ahead of upcoming polls.
