A prime suspect in the brutal rape and murder of a minor girl in Baruipur was shot dead in a police encounter late Tuesday night. Authorities reported that the incident occurred when the accused attempted to flee custody by snatching a service weapon and firing at the police team during a crime scene reconstruction.
The Encounter During Crime Scene Reconstruction
According to police sources, the accused who was previously spotted with the victim on CCTV footage was taken to Suryapur in Baruipur around 12:45 AM on Wednesday for a reconstruction of the crime sequence.
“Just as the reconstruction process was about to begin, the accused suddenly snatched a firearm from one of the police personnel, fired a round at the team, and attempted to escape,” a senior police official stated.
In self-defense, the police team returned fire, injuring the suspect. He was immediately rushed to the Baruipur Sub-divisional Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Law enforcement authorities have initiated the necessary legal proceedings following the encounter.
Background of the Case
The minor girl had been missing since Saturday. Her body was discovered on Sunday, packed inside a sack in a local pond near the railway tracks. In a chilling twist, local residents revealed that the deceased suspect had actively participated alongside them in searching for and eventually recovering the victim’s body from the pond.
The incident has drawn significant political attention. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited the grieving family yesterday to offer his condolences and assured them that the perpetrators would face the harshest possible punishment.
Fourth Accomplice Apprehended
In a parallel development, the police have made a breakthrough by arresting a fourth suspect who had been evading capture.
A joint operation conducted by the Special Task Force (STF), the Baruipur Special Operations Group (SOG), and the district police successfully tracked the fugitive to Basirhat using mobile location data. With this latest arrest, all major suspects linked to the minor’s assault and murder have been accounted for.
