Storms in Sikkim Kill One, Injure Three as Trees Collapse

The CSR Journal Magazine

Gangtok (Sikkim) witnessed tragic events on March 15, as one woman lost her life and three others were injured due to severe weather conditions characterized by strong winds and heavy rainfall. The deceased has been identified as Kala Devi Chettri, a 55-year-old resident who died after a tree fell on her during a thunderstorm in Rakdong Kafer, situated within the Tumin-Lingi Constituency.

According to local police reports, the incident occurred amidst intense weather, which caused widespread disruptions across various regions in Sikkim. Officials stated that the tree collapsed due to strong winds, striking Chettri and resulting in fatal injuries. Emergency responders and local residents rushed to the scene following the incident.

Additional Injuries Reported Across the Region

In a separate occurrence, three individuals sustained injuries when a tree fell onto a passenger vehicle in Chota Singtam located in the Pakyong district. The strong winds, combined with heavy rain, contributed to these hazardous conditions, prompting immediate medical attention for the injured parties at a nearby hospital.

As severe weather swept through, numerous areas of Sikkim experienced abrupt shifts in climatic conditions. Reports indicate that residents faced challenges from strong winds, substantial rainfall, and even hailstorms, which further damaged trees and disrupted normal movement within local communities.

Weather Conditions Improves in National Capital

In contrast, the national capital experienced light rainfall on the same day, providing a refreshing change after a string of high temperatures in recent days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) noted that the temperature in Delhi was recorded at 22.2°C at 5.30 am. Visuals from key areas, including Pandit Pant Marg and Ferozeshah Road, displayed wet streets as residents navigated through the light showers.

The IMD has predicted thunderstorms, lightning, and potential hailstorms for March 15 and 16, while no adverse weather warnings have been issued for the remainder of the week. Along with the light rainfall, gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km/h were observed in various parts of the capital, including areas such as Safdarjung, Palam, and Narela.

This change in weather is expected to relieve residents from the preceding heatwave, as many districts reported temperatures above 30°C just a day prior. Data from IMD showed that temperature readings across five major stations revealed that Ridge recorded the highest temperature at 33.8°C, while Lodi Road registered 33.0°C, and Ayanagar noted 32.8°C. Safdarjung and Palam temperatures were slightly lower at 32.6°C and 31.5°C, respectively. Each station experienced a significant drop in temperature, with Palam reporting the largest decrease of -3.6°C, and the Ridge showing the smallest change at -2.8°C.
