Snubbed from T20, Shubman Gill Plots IPL 2026 Comeback with Cheteshwar Pujara Support

The CSR Journal Magazine

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 prepares to kick off on March 28, attention is focused on Shubman Gill, captain of the Gujarat Titans. Despite his crucial role in the leadership of India’s Test and ODI squads, Gill’s exclusion from the international T20 circuit has generated significant conversation in the cricket community.

Former Indian Test player Cheteshwar Pujara remarked that the disappointment from his recent T20 World Cup snub might serve as the motivation Gill needs for a transformative season. The selectors’ decision to leave him off the World Cup roster was interpreted by many as a strategic shift towards a more aggressive approach in the national team selection.

Strategic Decisions Behind Selection

While Gill has proven himself as a capable performer in longer formats, his inability to consistently achieve the aggressive strike rate expected in T20 cricket led the selectors to opt for a more explosive combination for the openings. Although this decision has been regarded by analysts as a necessary tactic, it has deprived the 26-year-old of a chance to compete for accolades in the shortest format on home soil. On JioHotstar’s ‘Game Plan – Know Your Team,’ Pujara commented on the potential impact of this snub on Gill’s upcoming performances.

He stated, “The T20 World Cup squad exclusion will definitely energize Shubman Gill. He is a quality player adept in all formats. A strong showing in IPL 2026 will certainly enhance his chances of being recalled to the T20I team.”

Gill’s Statistics and Past Performance

In spite of the recent international setback, Gill heads into IPL 2026 following an impressive performance in 2025. The statistics reflect that he scored 650 runs with an average of 50.00, concluding the season as the fourth-highest run-scorer in the league. A notable improvement was observed in his strike rate, which reached 155.88, a marked increase from his career average of 138.72.

Nevertheless, Gill and the Titans exited the tournament in the 2025 Eliminator, continuing to shadow his reputation in T20 formats as merely an anchor. Pujara expressed optimism that the coming season could provide Gill with the chance to address the discussions surrounding his strike rate definitively.

Expectations for IPL 2026

Pujara acknowledged the pressure Gill might feel due to his absence from the T20 international squad, but he also emphasized the opportunity that lies ahead. He mentioned, “While there will be pressure, this is an excellent chance for him to maintain his batting form. He needs to focus on accelerating his game further, which has been an area of improvement for him. This IPL is the perfect opportunity for him to demonstrate that he can achieve a strike rate between 150 and 160.” Gill appeared to be in good spirits during the recent BCCI Naman Awards, where he received the BCCI Cricketer of the Year Award for his outstanding performance in Test and ODI cricket.

Upcoming Season and Initial Match Details

As he prepares to lead the Titans in IPL 2026, Gill is eager to make an impression in the T20 format. The Gujarat Titans will commence their campaign against last year’s finalists, the Punjab Kings, at Mullanpur on April 1. With expectations running high, all eyes will be on Gill as he seeks to capitalize on this pivotal season.
