Shiv Sena (UBT) Issues Show-Cause Notice to Absentee MPs

The CSR Journal Magazine

Shiv Sena (UBT) has taken decisive action by issuing show-cause notices to its Members of Parliament (MPs) who have failed to attend recent meetings. This move signals the party’s growing concerns regarding absenteeism among its parliamentary members. Anil Desai, the party’s Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha, formally addressed the issue and has provided a stringent 24-hour deadline for the MPs to submit their written explanations for their non-attendance.

Consequences of Non-Compliance

The show-cause notices were delivered with a stern warning: failure to respond within the set time frame will lead the party to interpret the lack of response as a voluntary resignation from their membership. Consequently, the MPs will face repercussions under the Tenth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, known as the Anti-Defection Law. The party appears committed to maintaining discipline within its ranks amid recent tensions.

These developments come against the backdrop of ‘Operation Tiger’, an initiative involving a mass migration of party members to the faction led by Eknath Shinde. Such defections have left Shiv Sena (UBT) in a precarious position, highlighting internal conflicts, the absence of several MPs, and the looming threat of legal measures against absent members.

The situation intensified during a parliamentary party meeting held in New Delhi, which focused on addressing these challenges. Of the nine Lok Sabha MPs affiliated with the party, only three—Arvind Sawant, Anil Desai, and Rajabhau Waje—were present at the meeting called by the party whips, underscoring the widening rift.

Formal Action Initiated Against Absentees

The UBT faction has acted swiftly in light of the ongoing attendance issues. Sanjay Raut, a Rajya Sabha MP, confirmed that the six MPs who did not attend had previously been issued show-cause notices, thereby commencing the process for their potential disqualification from the Lok Sabha. Raut made the announcement at a recent press conference, outlining that efforts are underway to secure the disqualification of these members.

“The process for taking action has started,” Raut asserted. He reiterated the party’s intention to adhere to established rules, stating that, if the Lok Sabha Speaker follows legal norms and the Supreme Court’s guidelines, the absentees should be disqualified. This statement highlights the party’s determination to address the issue of compliance among its MPs.

The controversy surrounding “Operation Tiger” gained traction following remarks made by Shiv Sena MLC Chandrakant Raghuvanshi. He claimed that six MPs from the Shiv Sena (UBT) had signalled their trust in Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and had made the decision to join his faction. This further complicates the political landscape and underscores the significance of attendance and loyalty within the party structure, as defections continue to pose challenges to Shiv Sena (UBT).

Political Ramifications of the Situation

The current crisis reflects broader implications for Shiv Sena (UBT), indicating a potential reshaping of its parliamentary presence and influence. As party leadership grapples with managing dissent and absenteeism among its ranks, the forthcoming responses from the implicated MPs will likely play a crucial role in determining the future course of action. The emphasis on maintaining party discipline amid these challenges suggests an urgent need for cohesive strategies to retain support and loyalty within the party.

Ultimately, the ongoing developments underscore the tension within Shiv Sena (UBT) and spotlight the challenges political parties face in maintaining unity amidst competing interests. As the situation evolves, it remains to be seen how these internal dynamics will influence the party’s legislative effectiveness and public support in the region.
