Shashi Tharoor Supports Government’s Approach to Iran Conflict

The CSR Journal Magazine

Congress Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor has expressed his support for the Indian government’s stance on the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. He described the government’s approach as “responsible statecraft” rather than a retreat from moral obligations. In a recent article published in the Indian Express, Tharoor acknowledged that the military intervention cannot be defended under international law and pits it against foundational principles upheld by India, such as sovereignty and non-aggression. However, he maintained that India’s measured response indicates a strategic sensibility and reflects an understanding of the interconnectedness of national interests with the prevailing regional realities.

Criticism from Party Leaders

Tharoor’s position stands in stark contrast to that of his party, the Congress, which has criticized the government for not vocally opposing the conflict since the United States and Israel initiated strikes on Iran last month, leading to numerous civilian casualties, including the assassination of key figures such as Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, emphasized the necessity for India to adopt a “morally clear” stance against unilateral military actions. Former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi criticized the government’s silence regarding Khamenei’s assassination, characterizing it as an abdication rather than a neutral stance.

Tharoor’s Insights on India’s Foreign Policy

In his article, Tharoor pointed out that India’s responses were not timely, indicating that condolences regarding Khamenei’s death were issued late. Nevertheless, he argued that choosing silence over confrontation should not be condemned. He clarified that India’s silence does not imply endorsement of the war but signifies a recognition that national interests require caution instead of performative actions. Tharoor took a critical stance against those who accuse the government of moral cowardice, suggesting that foreign policy should not be treated merely as an intellectual exercise devoid of potential repercussions.

Historical Context of Foreign Policy

Tharoor emphasized the importance of adapting Nehruvian and Gandhian principles in line with current national interests. By referencing India’s past alliances during the Cold War, he noted that the leadership at that time regarded the Soviet Union as a vital ally that helped mitigate Western hostility. He stressed that moral considerations should not undermine crucial partnerships, even if those partnerships breached international law. The need for prudence over posturing was highlighted as a necessary approach, relevant both to the current conflict involving Ukraine and the situation in Iran.

Implications for India’s Global Relations

As a seasoned diplomat, Tharoor advised caution in dealing with the United States, especially under the unpredictable leadership of Donald Trump. He affirmed the necessity for India to maintain stable relations with the US, particularly concerning defense cooperation and technology partnerships, as well as to counterbalance China’s influence. Tharoor also pointed out the significant economic ties between India and the Gulf nations, noting that about nine million Indians are engaged in these regions. Ongoing conflicts threaten nearly $200 billion in annual trade, crucial energy sources, and the livelihoods of the Indian diaspora.

The Need for Strategic Restraint

Tharoor warned that engaging in self-righteous condemnations regarding the US-Israeli actions in Iran could jeopardize these vital relationships. He articulated that prioritizing grandstanding over substantial diplomatic strategies does not serve India’s interests, especially at a time when the consequences of disruption are considerable. According to him, this approach allows India to safeguard its interests and maintain open communication channels across competing powers.

Tharoor’s Consistent Alignment with Government Policies

This is not the first instance where Tharoor has resonated with government policies, as he has previously commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s counterterrorism strategies and facilitated all-party diplomacy regarding international issues. However, his recent comments may further strain his relations with fellow Congress members.
