Congress MP Shashi Tharoor underscored the importance of national unity concerning India’s interests following Prime Minister Modi’s recent meeting with Chief Ministers and Lieutenant Governors addressing the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Tharoor expressed the need for cooperation between the central government and state administrations, emphasizing mutual respect and effective federal collaboration to respond to national challenges.

Prime Minister Modi’s Video Conference Meeting

On March 27, Prime Minister Modi conducted a video conference with Chief Ministers and Lieutenant Governors to assess readiness in relation to the escalating situation in West Asia and its potential repercussions for India. Tharoor commented on the importance of unity, stating, “We are all united when it comes to the national interest. If there is a UDF Government in Kerala, we are not going to be seceding from the Union. We have to look after national interests, and Kerala has always been deeply integrated into India’s activities.” He stressed that the state’s actions would align with national policies.

Political Cooperation Amidst Differences

Tharoor acknowledged that despite political differences, it remains vital for both the central and state governments to collaborate for the welfare of the country. “Working with the Central Government is a duty of the State Government, and it’s equally important for the Centre to engage with the states,” he remarked. He hopes both sides will respect their respective roles and responsibilities within a framework of mutual federalism.

Support for Diplomatic Engagements

Tharoor welcomed the ongoing diplomatic dialogues between Prime Minister Modi and US President Donald Trump, describing these interactions as significant and beneficial. He highlighted the importance of communication, stating, “I am glad that the President of the US and the Prime Minister of India are talking to each other; that is a good thing.” His remarks follow a recent high-level telephone conversation between PM Modi and President Trump addressing the prevailing conflict in West Asia, which has critical implications for global energy markets and maritime security.

Ongoing Regional Tensions and Global Concerns

The conflict in West Asia escalated following the US-Israel strikes on Iran on February 28, resulting in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In response, Iran’s actions have intensified the conflict, affecting several neighboring countries. As these tensions continue to unfold, Tharoor emphasized the necessity for India to maintain connections with key global players, reflecting the urgency of international solidarity in times of unrest.
