Severe Heatwave Affects Plains, Rain Forecast for Himalayan Regions

The CSR Journal Magazine

Across the nation, temperatures are rising sharply as a heatwave engulfs the plains without any significant transition. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that maximum temperatures in Northwest India are currently exceeding normal levels by four to eight degrees Celsius. Some areas are experiencing pronounced increases, with Akola in Maharashtra registering a peak temperature of 38.5 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

Weather Outlook for Delhi

Residents of the national capital are advised to brace themselves for another warm day on Wednesday. The IMD anticipates a largely clear sky, with maximum temperatures expected to reach around 34 degrees Celsius. According to Devendra Tripathi, founder of Mausam Tak, dry air flowing in from the northwest is influencing local weather conditions. Tripathi noted that this influx of dry winds is contributing to persistently hot and dry weather across the plains.

Record Highs Expected This Week

Recent observations by independent weather expert Navdeep Dahiya highlighted that Delhi recorded a significant high of 31.5 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. The forecast predicts that temperatures will rise to 34 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. Dahiya also cautioned that areas in Rajasthan might see temperatures soar to about 40 degrees Celsius by the weekend. Tripathi added that the current heating trend is largely due to the lack of robust weather systems, as the absence of a strong Western Disturbance allows heat to rapidly intensify across the region.

Rain Forecast for the Himalayas

While the plains remain predominantly dry, the IMD is predicting possible light rainfall or even snowfall in the higher altitudes of Jammu and Kashmir starting March 4. Tripathi remarked that a weak Western Disturbance is moving toward the Himalayan region, but he noted that its intensity is not expected to lead to significant cooling effects in the plains.

Isolated Rain Predicted for Northeast India

Weather forecasts from Skymet and other official bulletins indicate that isolated light rainfall may occur over Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh. Concurrently, the IMD has issued a warning for dense fog in Sikkim for the morning hours of March 4. Tripathi pointed out that while the northeastern states might receive some moisture, the broader region continues to be affected by the rising heat. Hot and humid weather conditions are also anticipated in coastal areas of Gujarat and Konkan.
