The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced a warning for high waves and swell surge along the coasts of Keralam, Lakshadweep, South Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry. The coastal regions are anticipated to encounter rough seas, with swell waves potentially reaching heights between 1.1 and 2.2 metres. This signifies a significant risk of nearshore surging and coastal erosion.

In light of these conditions, fishermen have been strongly advised against venturing into the ocean. Authorities have prohibited operations of small fishing vessels, boat movements, and seaside activities to ensure safety. Furthermore, squally winds are expected, with speeds approaching 65 kilometres per hour, impacting parts of the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Bay of Bengal, compelling communities along the coast to remain vigilant.

Rainfall Predictions and Impact on Districts

The IMD has also provided an updated rainfall forecast, indicating that heavy rainfall is likely in Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki districts. Other regions, such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad, are expected to receive light to moderate showers. This rainfall activity is projected to persist across Keralam for the next four days, from August 20 to August 23, with a high likelihood of rain in all districts.

Intense spells of rainfall may result in poor visibility and traffic disruptions. The possibility of temporary traffic congestion arises from waterlogging and the uprooting of trees or branches. There are concerns that fallen trees could damage power infrastructure, while kutcha houses and huts may experience partial damage due to strong winds and falling debris. The agricultural sector may also face challenges, as heavy rainfall is likely to impact standing crops and vegetables at critical growth stages.

Additionally, the IMD has cautioned about the risks of landslides, mudslides, or landslips in vulnerable and hilly areas. Lightning strikes during thunderstorms pose a threat to both individuals and cattle in open spaces, raising further safety concerns for the local population.

Safety Advisories for Coastal and Hilly Regions

The IMD has issued several advisories to ensure public safety during this period of severe weather conditions. Residents are urged to adhere to official traffic advisories and to avoid staying in structures that may be deemed weak or vulnerable. Measures to protect crops should be taken seriously, including supporting vegetable pandals during the expected rainfall.

Furthermore, individuals are advised to seek safe indoor shelter during thunderstorms and lightning strikes. Staying clear of open areas and tall trees is recommended to reduce the risk of accidents. It is essential for the public to stay informed about the weather by monitoring the latest updates and official warnings issued by meteorological authorities.
