Sahibzada Farhan Breaks T20 World Cup Record with 383 Runs, Surpasses Virat Kohli’s 319

The CSR Journal Magazine

Pakistani cricketer Sahibzada Farhan has etched his name in the annals of T20 World Cup history by surpassing Indian batting legend Virat Kohli for the highest number of runs in a single edition of the tournament. Farhan achieved this milestone during a crucial match against Sri Lanka, scoring an impressive 100 runs off 60 balls, which included nine fours and five sixes. His performance came at a strike rate exceeding 166, exemplifying his dominance on the field.

In this tournament, Sahibzada has now accumulated 383 runs across seven matches and six innings, maintaining an average of 76.60 and a strike rate of 160.25. His remarkable tally features two centuries and two fifties, with a top score of 100 not out. This achievement surpasses Kohli’s record of 319 runs set during the 2014 T20 World Cup, further solidifying Farhan’s status in the tournament.

Joining an Elite Club of Centurions

With this performance, Sahibzada Farhan becomes a part of an exclusive group of cricketers, including West Indies icon Chris Gayle, each of whom has scored two centuries in T20 World Cup history. Notably, both of Farhan’s centuries have been made in a single edition, a feat that highlights his consistency and ability to perform under pressure. He now trails only Babar Azam, who has three hundreds for Pakistan in T20 internationals.

Moreover, Sahibzada is now tied with cricketing greats such as Matthew Hayden, Virat Kohli, and Babar Azam for the most fifty-plus scores in a single T20 World Cup edition, each having recorded four such scores across their respective tournaments.

Record-Breaking Partnership

In the same match, Sahibzada Farhan formed a formidable opening partnership of 176 runs with Fakhar Zaman, who scored 84 runs off 42 balls featuring nine fours and four sixes. This partnership stands as the highest in T20 World Cup history, eclipsing the previous record of 175 runs established by New Zealand’s Tim Seifert and Finn Allen against the UAE earlier in this tournament.

During the match, Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to field first. However, the strong start provided by Farhan and Zaman proved to be a challenge for the Sri Lankan bowlers. Following the dismissal of Zaman, the Sri Lankan bowlers, including Dilshan Madushanka with figures of 3 for 33, captain Dasun Shanaka with 2 for 42, and Dushmantha Chameera with 1 for 48, managed to restrict Pakistan to a total of 212 for 8, falling short of the anticipated score of 220 to 230 runs.

Qualifying for the Semifinals

To qualify for the semifinals, Pakistan needs to limit the Sri Lankan team to 147 runs or fewer. A successful containment effort would also aid in improving their net run rate compared to New Zealand, enhancing their chances of reaching the next stage of the tournament. The urgency of the match adds an additional layer of intensity as both teams strive to secure a semifinal berth.
