S Ramadoss-led PMK and Sasikala’s AIPTMMK Form Alliance Ahead of Tamil Nadu Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) faction, under the leadership of S Ramadoss, has officially announced its collaboration with the All India Puratchi Thalaivar Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AIPTMMK) founded by VK Sasikala for the forthcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections. This alliance will contest all 234 assembly seats. During a press conference in Villupuram, Ramadoss stated that the partnership has generated considerable political momentum throughout Tamil Nadu.

Political Impact and Future Prospects

Ramadoss expressed confidence that this alliance has already made a substantial impact in Tamil Nadu, referring to its ability to affect public sentiment. He emphasized that the collective goal of this partnership is public welfare and mentioned the possibility of additional parties or leaders joining their coalition. The PMK founder indicated that collaborative decision-making regarding seat-sharing will be undertaken with Sasikala.

Aims and Objectives of the Alliance

Both PMK and AIPTMMK released a joint statement outlining their intentions for the alliance. They expressed optimism that their partnership aims to transform the socio-political landscape by eliminating what they termed “traitorous identities” within Tamil Nadu. Additionally, the alliance seeks to enhance the welfare of the populace and promote the self-respect and autonomy of the state.

Background on Key Players

VK Sasikala, a prominent political figure, previously served as the acting general secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and was a close associate of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. S Ramadoss leads one faction of PMK, while another faction, headed by his estranged son Anbumani Ramadoss, has aligned itself with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). There were also rumors regarding potential collaborations between Sasikala and actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), although those reports were dismissed by the party.

Election Schedule and Competitors

The Election Commission of India has set the date for the Tamil Nadu assembly elections to be conducted in a single phase on April 23. The counting of votes will take place on May 4. The current term of the 234-member assembly concludes on May 10. The Union Territory of Puducherry is scheduled to hold its elections on April 9, with vote counting also set for May 4. In this multi-party contest, key competitors include Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led Secular Progressive Alliance, which encompasses Congress and Vijayakanth’s DMDK, alongside the NDA led by AIADMK, which includes the BJP and the PMK faction led by Anbumani Ramadoss. NTK is also a significant contender, vying for seats independently across all 234 constituencies.
