Russian Intelligence Claims UK and France Planning Nuclear Transfer to Ukraine

The CSR Journal Magazine

A statement issued by a Russian intelligence agency on Tuesday alleged that the United Kingdom and France are secretly arranging the transfer of nuclear weapons to Ukraine. This claim was made by the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) as the military operation in Ukraine approaches its fifth year. The SVR did not provide any proof to substantiate its allegations and stated, “The British and French realise that their designs imply a gross violation of international law, primarily the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and pose a risk to the global non-proliferation regime.” The agency further asserted that Western efforts appear focused on creating an impression that Ukraine has independently developed nuclear capabilities.

Kremlin’s Response to the Allegations

In response to the SVR’s statement, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized that Ukraine’s non-nuclear status remains a fundamental condition for settling the ongoing conflict. Peskov remarked, “The information regarding Paris and London’s intentions to provide Kyiv with a nuclear weapon is of critical importance… We will certainly consider this information as we continue the negotiations.” The next phase of peace talks, mediated by the United States, is reportedly scheduled to take place in Geneva on February 27.

Reactions from France and Ukraine

The SVR’s assertions did not include any documentation to support its claims. In response, the French embassy in Moscow labelled the allegations as “an outright lie,” while there has been no immediate comment from the British authorities. Ukraine has also strongly rejected the claims, calling them “absurd.” Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, stated, “Russian officials, noted for their consistent record of misinformation, are once again attempting to spread the earlier falsehoods related to ‘dirty bombs.’ For the record: Ukraine has previously refuted such ludicrous assertions made by Russia numerous times, and we formally reject them once more. We call on the global community to dismiss and condemn Russia’s fabricated narratives.”
