Russia Slams US–Israel Strikes on Iran, Warns of Wider Regional Fallout

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Russian Foreign Ministry has condemned recent airstrikes conducted by the United States and Israel on Iranian territory. In a statement made by spokesperson Maria Zakharova, Russia expressed concern over what it perceives as destabilizing actions undermining international legal norms. The ministry urged all involved parties to resume diplomatic dialogue and prioritize peaceful resolutions. Zakharova emphasized the repeated nature of these attacks, labeling them as alarming and a violation of fundamental principles of international relations.

Concerns Over Regional Stability

Zakharova highlighted serious worries regarding the implications of US military actions for global non-proliferation efforts. She criticized the rationale given by the US and Israel, contending that any claims regarding the prevention of Iran’s nuclear advancements are misrepresented. According to her, these attacks, particularly on facilities under International Atomic Energy Agency oversight, are unacceptable and driven by motives that extend beyond non-proliferation. She cautioned that such escalations could disturb the entire Middle East, potentially leading to increased military capabilities among regional states in response to perceived threats.

Call for International Assessment

The Russian Foreign Ministry called for organizations such as the United Nations and the IAEA to conduct an urgent and objective review of these military actions. Zakharova urged the international community to recognize the detrimental impact these strikes could have on peace and security in the region. She stated that the American and Israeli governments’ intentions appear to aim at destabilizing the Iranian state, which has resisted external pressures. Responsibility for the resulting humanitarian and economic crises in the region rests with those who initiated the conflict, according to the Russian statement.

Details of the Airstrike Incident

On the morning of February 28, US and Israeli forces executed airstrikes in Iran, described by Russia as premeditated aggression against a sovereign nation. Zakharova pointed to significant military preparations prior to these actions, indicating that they were not spontaneous but part of a coordinated strategy. She reiterated that this military campaign, masquerading as an effort to foster negotiations, contradicts earlier communications suggesting Israeli disinterest in military confrontation.

Diplomatic Communications Amid Conflict

On the same day, a telephone conversation occurred between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Iranian Foreign Minister A Araghchi, initiated by Iran. During the call, Araghchi outlined Iran’s defensive measures against US and Israeli military aggression, which he claimed have disrupted ongoing negotiations concerning the Iranian nuclear program. He also conveyed an urgent need to convene a meeting of the UN Security Council to address the escalating tensions.

Russian Advocacy for Peaceful Resolutions

Lavrov condemned the attacks carried out by US and Israeli forces, stressing their violation of international law and the implications for both regional and global stability. He called for an immediate cessation of military operations against Iran and urged a return to political and diplomatic avenues for resolution. The Russian Foreign Ministry reiterated Russia’s preparedness to assist in efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful settlement, emphasizing mutual respect and a balanced approach as key elements in addressing the ongoing crisis.
