Alleging a serious breakdown of law and order and the misuse of the police machinery in West Bengal, the opposition faction ‘Kalighat Trinamool Congress’ has sought urgent intervention from the highest constitutional authorities. The faction has written to President Droupadi Murmu and Governor R. N. Ravi, requesting immediate meetings to apprise them of the situation.

The Kalighat faction has claimed that the police have remained passive spectators during a series of violent incidents and unrest across the state. Referring to an incident on May 30, the party alleged that Abhishek Banerjee was assaulted while on his way to visit the family of a deceased party worker in Sonarpur, where he was reportedly slapped, punched and pelted with eggs. The faction further alleged that other leaders, including Mahua Moitra and Saugata Roy, were similarly targeted in separate incidents.

The party also cited a recent early-morning attack on its office on Camac Street, alleging that armed individuals described as “BJP goons” vandalised the premises and snatched mobile phones from workers. Questioning the role of law enforcement, Banerjee reportedly raised concerns over whether the rule of law prevails if police fail to act even after such incidents.

Opposition accuses government of misusing police

At the same time, the opposition camp has intensified its criticism of the state government led by Suvendu Adhikari, accusing it of using the police as a political tool. Addressing rallies on July 21 and August 28, Trinamool leader and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that permissions for opposition meetings and processions were being denied. She warned that her party would take to the streets with public support even without official clearance if such restrictions continue.

Delegation to highlight key concerns

According to party sources, the proposed meetings with the President and the Governor will be used to present a detailed account of the alleged breakdown in law and order and instances of police inaction. The Kalighat Trinamool Congress is also expected to raise concerns over crimes against women and what it describes as systematic attempts to suppress opposition voices for political purposes.
