The Rajasthan State Election Commission has officially announced the schedule for mayoral elections in the cities of Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Kota, along with the election for the Chairperson of Suket Municipality. The voting is set to take place on 25 September 2026. Candidates interested in contesting can submit their nomination papers on 18 and 19 September.

The scrutiny of these nomination papers will occur on 21 September, whilst the deadline for any withdrawal of nominations is 22 September. The commission has laid out a clear timetable to ensure a streamlined electoral process in these municipalities.

This announcement comes after a public notice was issued by the State Election Commission at 8 am on the previous Tuesday, calling for elections in all 305 urban local bodies, excluding the aforementioned municipal corporations and the Suket municipality.

Recent Performance in Urban Local Body Elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has recently experienced significant success in the urban local body elections across Rajasthan. In the Jaipur Municipal Corporation, the BJP won decisively with 78 seats out of a total of 150 wards, reflecting their stronghold in the region. The Congress party finished with 53 seats, while independent candidates managed to secure 15 wards.

As of now, results for 146 of the 150 wards in Jaipur have been announced, while the final outcomes for four remaining wards are pending due to reported technical issues with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). A re-polling has been scheduled for five booths affected by these complications.

Jaipur District Collector Sandesh Nayak noted that the EVM results from specific booths in Ward 9, 18, 25, and 34 could not be retrieved, necessitating further polling to clarify the election results in these areas.

Current Political Landscape in Rajasthan

The election outcome illustrates a shifting political landscape in Rajasthan, particularly for the BJP, which is set to form boards in major urban areas such as Jaipur, Kota, Udaipur, and Bhilwara. In contrast, the Congress has achieved a decisive majority in Bikaner Municipal Corporation.

The results from the urban local body elections reflect the evolving dynamics of voter preferences in the state. Independent candidates have also emerged as significant players in multiple civic bodies where no party has claimed a clear majority, indicating a potential fragmentation of traditional political power structures.
