Rajasthan Faces Alarming Rise in Cancer Cases, Jaipur Worst Hit

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rajasthan has been in the grip of a growing health crisis, and among all diseases, cancer poses a serious threat across the state. Latest research by Dr. Shri Gopal Kabra, Director (Clinical) at Bhagwan Mahaveer Cancer Hospital (BMCH), highlights that there has been an increase in cancer cases, with Jaipur district reporting the highest number of cases.

Patients from across 33 districts

For the study, the researcher analyzed ICD-10 coded data of patients diagnosed with cancer at BMCH. In 2024, the hospital diagnosed 10,363 cancer cases out of 14,911 registered patients. Patients from across 33 districts of Rajasthan get treated here, hence making the sample reliable and authentic.

Top Cancers in Rajasthan

During a conversation with The CSR Journal, Dr. Kabra said, “Patient data is unselected and self-referred, which provides a valid basis for understanding the pattern and geographic distribution of cancer in Rajasthan. This analysis can guide policymakers in planning interventions effectively.”

Top Cancers in Rajasthan

The research identifies the five most prevalent cancers in the state:

  • Lip, Oral Cavity, and Pharynx – 26.89%

  • Digestive Organs – 15.45%

  • Breast – 11.38%

  • Respiratory and Intrathoracic Organs – 10.02%

  • Female Genital Organs – 8.41%

Other types of cancers, though not as severe as the above, but still recorded in significant numbers, include bone and cartilage, melanoma, soft tissue, male genital organs, urinary tract, thyroid, lymphoid and haematopoietic tissues, and endocrine-related malignancies.

When asked about the key reasons behind the top cancers, Dr. Kabra said, “The high prevalence of oral, digestive, and respiratory cancers is linked to lifestyle factors such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and exposure to pesticides. Similarly, the rising incidence of breast and cervical cancer in women emphasizes the need for early detection and treatment.”

District-Wise Distribution

Analysis of the data highlights that the cases are widely spread, with Jaipur reporting the highest number of patients—2,837—followed by Alwar (1,031), Ajmer (855), and Jhunjhunu (649). Remote and smaller districts like Banswara and Dungarpur reported far fewer cases.

As per the projected population of Rajasthan for 2025, BMCH data states that the average cancer incidence in Rajasthan is estimated at 134.57 cases per 100,000 population, significantly above India’s national average of 113 per 100,000.

Analysis of 14,512 by BMCH was reported to Indian Cancer Registry. From 2020 to 2024, 14,512 consecutive cancer patients coming from all over Rajasthan, have been reported to the Registry.

Data revealed the top five cancers

  1. Lip, Oral Cavity, and Pharynx – 31.55%

  2. Digestive Organs – 14.90%

  3. Breast – 12.17%

  4. Respiratory and Intrathoracic Organs – 11%

  5. Female Genital Organs – 8.19%

Dr. Kabra notes, “The alignment of data with the Indian Cancer Registry underscores the reliability of our findings and the urgent need to act on this escalating public health challenge.”

Urgent Need for Action

Dr. Shri Gopal Kabra emphasised that immediate steps are required to combat this epidemic. Primary prevention measures, such as reducing tobacco and alcohol consumption and minimizing pesticide exposure, should be promoted widely. Secondary prevention through early screening, diagnosis, and treatment can significantly reduce morbidity and mortality.
