Punjab Police Apprehends Prime Suspect Amritpal Singh in 2025 Kamal Kaur Murder Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

Punjab Police confirmed the arrest of Amritpal Singh Mehron, the primary suspect in the murder case of Kamal Kaur, also known as Kanchan Kumari. The Counter Intelligence Wing apprehended him on February 1, 2025, with the assistance of its Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC). Singh was reportedly detained in the Middle East and subsequently deported back to India, landing at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on April 10, 2026.

The Director General of Police for Punjab, Gaurav Yadav, announced the arrest on social media platform X. He stated that Singh had evaded capture by fleeing the country after committing the crime, which took place on June 11, 2025. Following his deportation, Punjab Police took him into custody upon his arrival in Delhi.

Singh was previously declared a proclaimed offender by the Bathinda court on February 7, 2025. This legal decision prompted the Punjab Police to issue a Red Corner Notice against him through Interpol, leading to the successful tracking and extradition process.

Background of the Murder Case

Kamal Kaur’s body was discovered on June 11, 2025, in the parking area of Adesh Hospital in Bathinda. A post-mortem examination confirmed that she had been strangled. The circumstances surrounding her death raised significant public interest, leading to extensive media coverage.

Following the murder, three accomplices of Singh were apprehended: Jaspreet Singh, Nimratjit Singh, and Ranjit Singh. They were reportedly involved in the abduction and murder, which escalated the investigation into the case.

The police had been diligently pursuing leads since Kaur’s death, and the rapid response by law enforcement agencies resulted in a collaborative effort to apprehend Singh. The coordinated actions between local police and central agencies were pivotal in tracking his movements overseas.

Implications for Law Enforcement in Punjab

The successful arrest of Amritpal Singh Mehron has underscored the commitment of Punjab Police to combat organised crime and ensure public safety. Gaurav Yadav reiterated the force’s zero-tolerance stance against crime and anti-national elements within the region.

With this case now drawing significant attention, the police are expected to enhance their pursuit of fugitives who evade justice by seeking refuge abroad. The implications of this case could influence future strategies and collaborations between Indian law enforcement and international agencies.

As investigations continue post-arrest, the focus will remain on ensuring that all involved in the murder are brought to justice, thereby upholding the rule of law in Punjab. The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing serious criminal activity while also fostering community trust and safety.
