Pune Woman Found Hanging in Flat, Husband Arrested Amid Dowry Harassment Allegations

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 34-year-old woman was discovered hanging in her flat in Pune, leading to the arrest of her husband following allegations from her family regarding dowry harassment. The police have initiated a case under the charge of abetment of suicide. The victim, identified as Payal Zambre Patil, reportedly faced ongoing harassment from her husband and in-laws over demands for gold, according to her relatives.

Details of the Incident

Payal Zambre Patil, who previously worked as an IT professional, had resigned from her job. She was married to Akshay Zambre Patil, and the couple had a daughter. On Sunday, it is reported that Payal had a disagreement with her mother-in-law, which led to her leaving the house. Her family began searching for her the following day, and during this search, she was found hanging in a room of a flat located near their matrimonial home. The police stated that no suicide note was discovered at the scene.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officials found Payal hanging from the ceiling. They are currently recording statements from family members to gather further information. Payal’s brother, Rishikesh Pawar, expressed concerns about the apparent indifference of her husband and in-laws when he arrived at their home. He noted that they seemed unconcerned and only began searching for Payal after he questioned them.

Rishikesh recounted that he managed to enter the flat through a rear balcony after finding the door locked. He discovered Payal hanging inside. He mentioned that Payal had frequently complained about her mother-in-law’s harassment and had a quarrel with her just before the incident.

Allegations of Harassment and Demands for Gold

Payal’s relatives have made serious allegations against her husband and in-laws, claiming that they had subjected her to mental harassment since her marriage. They reported that every Diwali, there were demands for ten tolas of gold, which they could not fulfil due to their financial situation as farmers. They alleged that they had promised to meet these demands in the following year, but this was not accepted by Payal’s in-laws.

Furthermore, the family’s complaint to the police indicated that during Payal’s pregnancy in 2022, there was pressure from her in-laws for her to give birth to a male child. After the birth of her daughter on March 30, 2023, they allegedly visited her in the hospital and argued with her, stating they would not take responsibility for her or the child.

In the wake of Payal’s death, her relatives reportedly vandalised her in-laws’ residence. Senior Inspector Yashwant Nikam from the Swargate police station confirmed that a case of alleged abetment of suicide has been filed against Payal’s husband, mother-in-law, and father-in-law. Akshay has been taken into custody, and police teams are actively searching for the other accused family members.

Ongoing Investigation

The investigation into Payal’s death is being treated as a case of alleged abetment of suicide, while her family maintains that her husband and in-laws are culpable of murder and persistent harassment over dowry demands. The police are working to gather more evidence and statements to clarify the circumstances surrounding her death.

As the situation develops, the police are committed to ensuring that justice is served, and they are continuing their inquiries into the allegations made by Payal’s family. The case has drawn attention to issues of dowry-related violence and harassment, highlighting the need for further discussion and action on these critical social issues.
