Protest against the Kanpur FIR took place over the weekend in several districts, including Kaushambi, Pilibhit, Bareilly, Bhadohi, Lucknow, Unnao, and Kanpur. Most of these protests, according to the police, were organised without taking permission.
As of Monday, a total of five people have been arrested in Unnao while three in Kaushambi. Several others have been booked across various districts. On Sunday evening, tension escalated in the Ganga Ghat area of Unnao district after a group of people marched in support of the signboard.
Police Detention
According to the police, protesters marched through the locality shouting slogans, prompting security personnel to rush to the spot. When officers tried to stop the march, a heated argument broke out. As the police saw the situation getting out of control, they deployed more action forces, and the situation was brought back under control with the assistance of local residents.
The police registered a case against eight identified persons and several unidentified persons for their alleged involvement in the incident, said Ajay Kumar Singh, Station House Officer, Ganga Ghat.
Concerned officials are closely monitoring photographs and video clips of the protest to identify those involved. CCTV footage from cameras installed around the area is also being collected to analyse and verify the role of those who participated in the alleged unlawful activity.
“So far, five people have been arrested in the case. Efforts are on to trace and apprehend the remaining accused,” said the SHO. The Pilibhit Police Station booked nine people in connection with the protest. “All nine persons were booked for breach of peace,” said Pradeep Bishnoi, Station House Officer at Jahanabad Police Station.
In Kaushambi’s Manjhanpur area, the police arrested three people for taking out a procession without prior permission. “The three persons have also been booked for breach of peace,” said Sunil Kumar Singh, Station House Officer at Manjhanpur Police Station.
