Praveen Khandelwal Proposes Renaming Delhi to Indraprastha to Honour Its Heritage

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a recent communication, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Praveen Khandelwal addressed Union Home Minister Amit Shah, suggesting that the capital of India, Delhi, be renamed Indraprastha. Khandelwal emphasized the proposal’s significance in honoring the city’s deep historical and cultural lineage. He stated that revising the name would reflect the rich heritage and identity associated with Delhi, which has been central to one of the world’s oldest civilizations.

Historical Justification for the Name Change

Khandelwal articulated that there is a profound link between present-day Delhi and the ancient city of Indraprastha, famously established by the Pandavas as chronicled in the epic Mahabharata. He noted that historical texts, archaeological evidence, and continuous civilizational customs indicate that modern Delhi occupies the same geographical location as the ancient city, which was constructed alongside the banks of the Yamuna River. Khandelwal further asserted that the current name, Delhi, fails to adequately encapsulate the historical roots and original essence of the city.

Archaeological Evidence Supporting the Claims

The MP cited archaeological research conducted by the Archaeological Survey of India, particularly in Purana Qila, where layers of ancient settlements dating back to around 1000 BCE were discovered. This research has also uncovered Painted Grey Ware pottery linked to the era depicted in the Mahabharata, thereby reinforcing the notion that Indraprastha may have thrived in the area now known as Delhi.

Cultural Significance of the Proposed Name

In his remarks, Khandelwal reiterated the importance of a city’s name representing its cultural and civilizational ethos. He believes that adopting the name Indraprastha would resonate with Delhi’s cultural identity, encompassing local traditions, culinary habits, and linguistic heritage. Additionally, the MP has advocated for the installation of statues honoring the five Pandavas at a prominent site in Delhi, aiming to perpetuate cultural continuity for future generations.

Government’s Recent Name Change Decisions

In a related development, the Union Cabinet recently endorsed a proposal to alter the name of Kerala to Keralam. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the Kerala Alteration of Name Bill will soon be submitted to the state assembly for consideration. This move precedes the assembly elections scheduled for later this year, reflecting an ongoing trend of name changes within the country’s political landscape.
