China Mobilizes Satellites and Drones for Search and Rescue Operations After 7.0 Magnitude Earthquake in Tibet

The CSR Journal Magazine

China has mobilised satellites and drones to assist in search and rescue efforts after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Tibet, resulting in at least 16 deaths and 76 injuries. The earthquake occurred at 10.33 pm on Thursday, with a shallow depth of less than 10 km, primarily affecting Baqen County in Nagqu city within the Tibet Autonomous Region. The region has reported significant damage, prompting immediate rescue and relief operations.

Authorities have evacuated 12,489 residents from the affected area as they assess the destruction, which includes over 330 houses that either collapsed or sustained damage. A detailed report on the injuries, particularly those with severe conditions, has yet to be released. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with local agencies working to locate missing individuals and provide medical care to those injured.

According to reports from the state-run Xinhua news agency, the deployment of satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles aims to enhance emergency communication and capture aerial images of the devastated areas. The announcement was made by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation on Friday, indicating a coordinated response to the disaster.

Emergency Relief and Infrastructure Recovery

In response to the earthquake, the Chinese government has allocated 50 million yuan, approximately $7.5 million, for immediate disaster relief, along with an additional 30 million yuan for recovery efforts. Relief supplies have already reached the affected region, including 1,000 prefabricated houses, 3,239 tents, 2,821 folding beds, and 4,280 quilts, among other essential items.

Passenger train services on the Qinghai-Xizang Railway, which runs through the affected area, resumed operations at reduced speeds on Friday morning. By 10 am local time, electricity had been restored to 1,937 households in Baqen County, according to the State Grid Xizang Electric Power Co Ltd. These measures are part of a broader effort to restore essential services and support the displaced population.

Weather forecasts indicate that temperatures in the region may drop to minus nine degrees Celsius over the next three days, with intermittent snowfall expected on Saturday in three nearby townships. Local authorities are closely monitoring the weather conditions to ensure the safety of residents and the effectiveness of relief operations.

Seismic Activity and Geological Context

The Tibetan Plateau is known for its susceptibility to powerful earthquakes due to its location at the convergence of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Experts from the China Earthquake Networks Centre have classified Thursday’s earthquake as an “extensional rupture,” a geological phenomenon where the Earth’s crust is stretched and fractures occur due to tension and gravity.

The epicentre of the earthquake was located within the Changtang block of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, approximately 2 km from the nearest fault line. Historical data indicates that this block has experienced six earthquakes of magnitude 7 or above since 1900, with the most powerful being a magnitude 7.5 quake in Shuanghu in November 1997. This latest earthquake is viewed as a release of accumulated energy within the region.

Concerns have been raised regarding the impact of large hydropower projects in the area, including a $167.8 billion dam on the Brahmaputra River. Critics argue that such developments may exacerbate the ecological fragility of the Himalayan region, often referred to as the “Roof of the World.” As rescue teams continue their efforts, authorities remain focused on restoring essential services and preparing for the harsh weather conditions expected in the aftermath of the earthquake.
