Police Detain JNUSU Members During JNU Rally Over Education Issues

The CSR Journal Magazine

On Thursday, several members of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) were detained as they attempted to march from their campus to the Ministry of Education. The Delhi Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against JNUSU office-bearers in connection with previous unrest. Hundreds of students gathered at the Sabarmati T Point in the afternoon, holding placards and banners, as they prepared to participate in the rally.

Detentions Amidst Police Barricades

According to reports, the students were stopped at the university gate, which was heavily barricaded. Strong police presence was observed at the location. JNUSU president Aditi Mishra and former president Nitish Kumar were among the 51 individuals detained during the scuffle that ensued as they tried to exit the campus. The protest aimed to raise concerns over what students describe as institutional neglect in higher education.

Increased Security Measures Following Recent Violence

In response to incidents of violence earlier in the week, heightened security measures were implemented both inside and outside the university. On Monday, a protest escalated into violence, resulting in stone-pelting and physical altercations between members of JNUSU and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Following these events, the police initiated an FIR against JNUSU office-bearers in relation to the incident.

Ongoing Demands from the Students’ Union

The students’ union has been vocal about several demands, which include stricter enforcement of University Grants Commission regulations, increased financial support for public institutions, and the enactment of the proposed Rohith Vemula Act, aimed at addressing caste-based discrimination in higher education. Additionally, they called for the resignation of the JNU Vice-Chancellor due to alleged caste remarks made in a podcast on February 16.
