PM Modi Unveils Development Projects Worth Rs 10,800 Crore in Ernakulum, Kerala

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated and laid the foundation for a series of significant developmental projects in Ernakulum, Kerala, with a combined value of approximately Rs 10,800 crore. The Prime Minister also dedicated the Shoranur-Nilambur Road Railway Line Electrification Project to the nation. This electrification will enhance the efficiency and sustainability of train services by eliminating the need for locomotive changes at Shoranur, leading to faster operations.

New Train Service and Polypropylene Unit

During the event, PM Modi commenced a new train service that connects Palakkad to Pollachi, thereby enhancing rail connectivity between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. This service is expected to benefit a diverse range of travelers including daily commuters, pilgrims, and tourists. In addition, the Prime Minister laid the groundwork for the Polypropylene Unit at Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited’s Kochi Refinery, involving an investment exceeding Rs 5,500 crore. This facility is designed to produce 400 Kilo Tons Per Annum of polypropylene, a crucial material utilized in various sectors such as packaging, automotive, and textiles. The establishment of this unit aims to bolster India’s polymer manufacturing capacity while reducing reliance on imports, fostering industrial growth, and creating job opportunities in the area.

Highway Projects to Improve Connectivity

The Prime Minister also inaugurated two significant highway projects aimed at enhancing road infrastructure. The first, a six-lane expansion of the Thalapady-Chengala section of NH-66, was constructed at a cost exceeding Rs 2,650 crore. This expansion is part of the Mumbai-Kanyakumari Economic Corridor and aims to improve connectivity between Kasaragod, Kannur, and neighboring regions, enhancing access to vital towns such as Bekal and Payyannur.

The second project involves the six-laning of the Kozhikode Bypass from Vengalam to Ramanattukara, which was built for around Rs 2,140 crore. This initiative upgrades the current two-lane road to six lanes, along with service roads on either side. The development is anticipated to alleviate congestion and significantly reduce travel time from over one hour to approximately 15 to 20 minutes, while also enhancing access to key tourist destinations like Kozhikode Beach and Beypore Port.

Enhancements in Rural Infrastructure

PM Modi also inaugurated 23 rural roads constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in Kerala. These new roads are expected to improve accessibility in rural areas, facilitating better access to markets, education, healthcare, and employment opportunities, thereby enhancing the livelihoods of local residents.

Modernisation of Railway Stations and Renewable Energy Initiatives

Additionally, the Prime Minister inaugurated three redeveloped railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme: Shoranur Junction, Kuttippuram, and Changanassery. These stations have been modernized to offer enhanced passenger amenities and improvements in accessibility while incorporating local architectural features.

PM Modi also laid the foundation for a 50 MW Floating Solar Project in West Kallada, Kollam district, contributing to India’s clean energy objectives and reinforcing its commitment to sustainable energy development.

Political Context of the Visit

This initiative occurs in the context of the upcoming 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, where the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance is preparing to contest against the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist).
