As the conflict in West Asia continues into its fifth week, India is actively working to stabilize energy supplies nationwide. The government has initiated various measures in response to the disruptions caused by Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. To bolster these efforts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to hold a virtual meeting with Chief Ministers on Friday. This discussion aims to assess and enhance the resilience of fuel and commodity supplies across the country.
PM Modi recently addressed Parliament, underscoring the importance of close coordination between the central and state governments to navigate the current global crisis. He characterized the situation as unprecedented, urging the necessity for innovative solutions from both levels of government. Drawing parallels with the Covid-19 pandemic, he emphasized the need for collaboration reminiscent of that experienced during the national health emergency.
“The uninterrupted supply of essential commodities must be the topmost priority for every State. I appeal to all state governments to put special arrangements in place to ensure this,” PM Modi remarked, invoking the collaborative spirit of ‘Team India’ that prevailed during the pandemic.
Recollections of the Covid-19 Crisis
Approximately six years ago, as the world grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic, PM Modi held his first virtual meeting with Chief Ministers on March 20, 2020, just four days prior to India’s initial three-week lockdown aimed at controlling virus transmission. Over the span of the following year, he conducted more than a dozen such meetings, fostering coordination between the Centre and states regarding tracking, testing, and treatment of COVID-19 cases. “Teamwork is the key to facing the challenge,” he stated during a meeting on May 11, 2020.
As the gradual reopening process commenced in June 2020, PM Modi advocated for a balanced strategy to revive economic activity while managing the pandemic. He emphasized that state suggestions would play a crucial role in shaping the unlock process.
Vaccination Efforts and State Support
With the commencement of India’s vaccination campaign on January 16, 2021, PM Modi focused on enhancing vaccine coverage across all states. In a significant move to alleviate pressure on state governments, he announced that the federal government would provide free vaccinations for individuals above the age of 18, stating, “No state government will have to spend anything on vaccines,” during his address on June 7, 2021.
PM Modi expressed his appreciation for the collaboration between the Centre and states over the past year, noting that state governments had effectively managed their economies despite widespread global economic difficulties attributable to the pandemic. He highlighted the importance of customized approaches in the national economic response, stating, “We wanted to ensure that our solutions did not follow a ‘one size fits all’ model.” This approach reflected mutual trust in the strengths of India’s federal structure.
