PM Modi Engages in Bilateral Talks with Canadian PM Carney, Evaluates India-Canada Strategic Relations

On March 2, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted bilateral discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at Hyderabad House in New Delhi. The talks centered around enhancing collaboration and partnership between the two nations. A review of the progress made across various sectors of the India-Canada Strategic Partnership was a key focus of the meeting.

Canadian PM’s Official Visit

Prime Minister Carney arrived in India on February 27 for an official visit, extended by Prime Minister Modi. This trip marks Carney’s first official engagement in India, commencing with an initial stop in Mumbai. He is scheduled to leave India today after completing his engagements in the capital.

Indian External Affairs Minister’s Engagement

Earlier on the same day, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Prime Minister Carney and commended his efforts toward fostering a forward-looking partnership between India and Canada. In a message posted online, Jaishankar expressed his delight in meeting Carney and recognized his commitment to strengthening ties between the two countries.

Arrival and Welcome

The Canadian Prime Minister arrived in New Delhi on Sunday evening after a successful visit to Mumbai as part of his official itinerary. Jitin Prasada, the Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry and for Electronics and Information Technology, was present to welcome the dignitary at the airport.

Bilateral Talks and Strategic Review

The high-level discussions conducted at Hyderabad House were aimed at reviewing advancements in the India-Canada Strategic Partnership. Both leaders were set to hold delegation-level talks, reflecting on progress made to date in various areas of cooperation, including trade and investment, energy, critical minerals, agriculture, education, research and innovation, as well as people-to-people connections.

Past Engagements and Future Directions

Building on their previous meetings held in Kananaskis in June 2025 and Johannesburg in November 2025 during the G7 and G20 summits, the two Prime Ministers planned to assess ongoing collaboration in key areas of mutual interest. According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, they would also exchange perspectives on regional and global developments.

Participation in India-Canada CEOs Forum

In addition to their formal discussions, Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Carney were scheduled to participate in the India-Canada CEOs Forum. This visit represents a significant phase in the normalization of India-Canada bilateral relations, with expected discussions addressing critical strategic and economic issues relevant to both countries.
