Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed their sorrow on Tuesday regarding the tragic stampede that occurred in Nalanda, which resulted in multiple fatalities. At least eight women lost their lives in this unfortunate incident at the Shitala Mata temple, where a large gathering of devotees had assembled that morning, as reported by local police.

Compensation for Victims’ Families

The Prime Minister’s Office released a statement detailing Modi’s condolences, emphasizing the painful nature of the incident. He expressed heartfelt sympathy to the families of the deceased and offered prayers for the swift recovery of the injured. As part of the relief efforts, an ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) will be allocated to the next of kin of each victim, while those injured will receive Rs 50,000.

Nitish Kumar’s Response and Relief Operations

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also announced a compensation package aimed at supporting the families of the deceased. His announcement included an ex gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh from the Disaster Management Department and an additional Rs 2 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for each affected family. In a released statement, Kumar conveyed his condolences over the fatalities incurred during the stampede, which took place at the Sheetla Devi Temple in Bihar Sharif, Nalanda district.

Actions Taken Post-Incident

Following the tragic event, Chief Minister Kumar directed senior officials to promptly arrive at the site to engage in relief and rescue operations. He extended his wishes for the rapid recovery of those injured and instructed medical facilities to provide essential care for the injured victims. Local authorities indicated that the stampede was triggered due to excessive crowding during a weekly fair at the temple.

Concerns Over Crowd Management

Eyewitnesses at the scene raised concerns about inadequate police presence for crowd management, suggesting this may have contributed to the chaos. In response to the severity of the situation, authorities have ordered the closure of shops set up at the fair, aiming to restore order and ensure public safety in the aftermath of the incident.
