Russian strikes in Ukraine on Saturday led to the deaths of three civilians and injuries to dozens more, according to local officials. President Vladimir Putin spoke to the media at the BRICS summit in India on Friday, where he cautioned that any decision by European nations to deploy troops to Ukraine would constitute direct military engagement with Russia. He stated that discussions regarding troop deployments signify a potential escalation of hostilities. “Now they’re talking about how they’re considering sending troops into Ukraine. That means a war with Russia,” Putin remarked, emphasising his view on the seriousness of such a move.

Moscow has deemed the prospect of European nations contributing to a potential peacekeeping mission unacceptable. Putin asserted that Russia does not pose a threat to European nations, insisting, “there is no such threat and never has been.” He maintained that Russia does not intend to threaten its European neighbours, aiming to alleviate concerns among these countries regarding Russian military intentions.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk highlighted recent incidents that indicate a risk of intensified Russian provocations at border crossing points with Ukraine. On Tuesday night, two fatalities occurred when Russian drones struck the Starokozache crossing between Ukraine and Moldova, according to Tusk. He added that a “direct threat” to a Polish-Ukrainian border crossing was averted on Wednesday night due to effective cooperation between Warsaw and Kyiv.
