The Indian government has implemented a temporary ban on Telegram, which is set to last until June 22. The decision was made following recommendations from the National Testing Agency (NTA) to prevent the spread of leaks and misinformation related to the NEET examination. The announcement has ignited a significant amount of discussion and debate across various social media platforms.

Compounding the situation, Pavel Durov, CEO of Telegram, has alleged that Reliance is obstructing access to the application outside India. Given that Meta has a financial stake in Reliance and owns WhatsApp, Durov suggested this could be part of a competitive strategy. Nevertheless, many users are questioning why Telegram is facing a ban while other messaging applications like WhatsApp and Signal remain operational.

The NTA has clarified that the intention behind the ban is to tackle misinformation and fraudulent activities related to the re-examination papers, which are set for June 21. At present, the security of these papers remains intact. This context underlines the urgency behind the government’s actions and the appeal of specific features offered by Telegram that may facilitate misinformation dissemination.

Distinct Features of Telegram

Telegram’s approach to user privacy notably distinguishes it from WhatsApp. One of the key features is the option to use usernames instead of phone numbers for connecting with others. This feature allows users to maintain a level of anonymity, enhancing the privacy of interactions. In contrast, WhatsApp requires the sharing of phone numbers, even for casual conversations, which might deter users concerned about privacy.

Another prominent feature of Telegram is its self-destructing messages. Users can assign custom timers to messages within secret chats, thereby providing additional layers of security. While WhatsApp has introduced a disappearing message feature, it lacks the flexible timer options available on Telegram. Furthermore, Telegram allows for scheduled message delivery, a feature that WhatsApp is reportedly in the process of rolling out.

When it comes to chat customisation, Telegram offers users more extensive options compared to WhatsApp. Users can design personal themes, modify backgrounds, and utilise animated emojis, thereby enriching their messaging experience. While WhatsApp is beginning to include similar features, access is limited to premium users, which frequently leads to frustrations among its broader user base.

Advanced Functionalities in Telegram

Telegram also supports bots and mini apps, which enhance user engagement by allowing for a multitude of functions within chats. Users can automate tasks, manage group activities, create polls, and even play games without exiting the app. This versatility makes Telegram more than merely a messaging platform, significantly expanding its utility.

Moreover, Telegram accommodates large groups, allowing for up to 2,00,000 members per group, significantly outstripping WhatsApp’s current limit of 1,024 members. This characteristic may have raised alarms within the government, as it enables the potential for mass dissemination of messages. Additionally, Telegram allows for file sharing up to 4GB for premium users and 2GB for free users, while WhatsApp maintains a uniform 2GB limit.

Another critical aspect is Telegram’s message editing feature, which enables users to revise posts without altering the original timestamp. This has drawn significant attention from authorities, leading to a request for Telegram to disable this feature until June 30. In contrast, WhatsApp updates the timestamp when a message is edited, which some users find less suitable for maintaining conversation continuity.
