₹27,000-Crore Game Changer! Patna–Purnea 6-Way Expressway to Transform Bihar’s Road Network

The CSR Journal Magazine

Bihar is set for a major infrastructure boost as work has begun on the ambitious Patna–Purnea six-lane expressway, a 245-kilometre project aimed at strengthening connectivity and accelerating economic growth across the state. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated the land acquisition process for the ₹27,000-crore project, marking a significant step toward Bihar’s first full-fledged expressway corridor.

A Game-Changer for Connectivity

Once completed, the Patna–Purnea Expressway will drastically reduce travel time between the state capital and eastern Bihar. Officials said the access-controlled six-lane road will ease congestion, improve road safety, and provide seamless connectivity for commuters, traders, and logistics operators.

The expressway has been granted official expressway status by the central government, underscoring its strategic importance.

Land Acquisition and Construction Timeline

According to NHAI officials, land acquisition is underway across districts falling on the Patna–Purnea route. The process will move through statutory stages, including the publication of notifications and compensation disbursal. Once around 80% of the land is acquired, the tendering process will begin, paving the way for full-scale construction.

In Purnea district alone, nearly 59 kilometres of the expressway will be developed, featuring multiple connectivity points, road overbridges, and underpasses to ensure smooth local movement alongside high-speed traffic.

Part of a Larger Expressway Push

The Patna–Purnea project is part of a broader push to modernise Bihar’s road infrastructure. Several other expressways and highways are at various stages of development, including the Gorakhpur–Siliguri corridor and upgraded national highways connecting Bihar with Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. Officials say these projects will create a dense, high-quality road network across the state.

Economic and Regional Impact

State leaders believe the expressway will act as a catalyst for development, boosting trade, investment, and employment. Faster road links are expected to benefit agriculture, small businesses, and industries by improving access to markets and reducing transportation costs. Improved connectivity is also likely to support tourism and regional development in north and eastern Bihar.

With multiple road projects slated for completion by 2026, Bihar appears poised for a significant transformation in mobility and infrastructure, positioning itself as an emerging hub in eastern India’s growth story.
