The CSR Journal Magazine

An Indian origin man named Prashant Sreekumar, 44, died of cardiac arrest in Canada, a few hours after he wasn’t given treatment in Grey Nuns Community hospital situated in Edmonton, Canada. On December 22, after Sreekumar complained of chest pain, he was rushed to the hospital. But, instead of immediate attendance, he was kept waiting in the emergency room for as long as eight hours. A report by a news agency has initiated a question on the healthcare response time in Canada.

Family members allege medical negligence after Prashant Sreekumar was made to wait

While talking to a media publication, Prashant’s family shared that a client drove Prashant to the hospital as he complained of chest pain. Prashant’s father reiterated how when he reached the hospital, Prashant told him, “Papa, I cannot bear the pain,” and he immediately informed the hospital that his son was in pain which was 15 out of 10. The hospital did ECG then after to check if there was some issue in the heart, but the hospital informed that everything was normal and they should wait. The hospital staff just gave Tylenol to Prashant, but the blood pressure kept increasing. “It went up, up, and up. To me, it was through the roof,” he only attended after eight hours’ wait.

“After waiting for so long, when I was in the treatment room, he looked at me, he got up and put his hand on his chest and just crashed.” Doctors and nurses tried to resuscitate him, but by then he was no more, shared Prashant’s father. It has been declared that Prashant died of cardiac arrest, he is survived by his wife and three children, aged 3, 10 and 14.

What is the hospital’s take on this?

The Covenant healthcare network operates the Grey Nuns Hospital and in a statement to news agencies denied to comment on the matter but confirmed that the case is under review by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. “We offer our sympathy to the patient’s family and friends. There is nothing more important than the safety and care of our patients and staff,” the statement read.
