In a very tragic incident, Sana Yousuf, a 17-year-old social media influencer was shot dead at her residence. Sana hailed from Upper Chitral, she was killed at her residence in Sector G-13 of Islamabad. According to reports, the attacker is believed to be a relative visiting her home frequently. The man opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene.

Gunshot wounds found on her body

The shocking incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Sumbal Police Station, Islamabad. Sana reportedly sustained two gunshot wounds and died on the spot. Her body was transferred to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for a post-mortem examination.

Following the incident the authorities have launched a manhunt to locate the suspect. Investigators are exploring multiple possible motives behind the murder. This includes honour killing, which has been a recurring issue in Pakistan. “The suspect entered the home, fired multiple shots, and escaped,” a police officer told local media

No arrests have been made so far, and the identity of the shooter remains officially unconfirmed.

The tragedy has sparked widespread outrage online as Sana was a well known social media influencer. Hashtags like #JusticeForSanaYousuf is trending on social media platforms. This includes X (formerly Twitter), TikTok and Instagram.

Sana’s social media account boasted more than 400,000 subscribers. She was majorly followed for her lifestyle content, cultural videos. She also Chitral, and advocacy for women’s education and empowerment.

SAMAA TV, a Pakistani news channel reported the attacker may have been a guest at her residence. “Sana Yousuf, who hailed from Upper Chitral and resided in Sector G-13 of Islamabad, was fatally shot by a guest who had come to visit her at her residence. The accused fled the scene immediately after the incident. The police have launched a manhunt to apprehend the suspect,” the channel said.

Disturbing Pattern of Violence Against Female Influencers

The recent case of Sana has brought to light a string of violent incidents involving female social media figures in Pakistan. Earlier this year, a 15-year-old girl named Hira was allegedly killed by her father and uncle in Quetta over her TikTok activity.

In another case, a Pakistani-American man was arrested for murdering his teenage daughter after relocating to Pakistan. This was also reportedly due to their disapproval of her social media presence.

Many are also calling attention to the broader issue of digital freedom and gender-based violence in Pakistan.
