Pakistan Pulls Out of Asian Senior Fencing Championships in New Delhi

The CSR Journal Magazine

Pakistan has officially declined an invitation to take part in the Asian Senior Fencing Championships scheduled to be held in New Delhi. This decision means that no team from Pakistan will be present at this continental event, which is set to commence on June 19 at Bharat Mandapam. This will be the first time India is hosting the championships.

Despite India’s openness to allowing Pakistani athletes to compete in international multilateral events, the Fencing Association of India (FAI) reported that Pakistan did not submit the necessary entries before the registration deadline. Rajeev Mehta, Secretary General of FAI, confirmed that the opportunity was extended to both Pakistan and Afghanistan, but neither nation chose to send their athletes for the competition.

With the entry deadline now passed, Mehta indicated that the focus has shifted to securing visas for the participating athletes and officials. He noted that preparations for the event are advancing well, although the absence of a Pakistani team will leave a noticeable gap in the competition.

Context of the Event and Participation

The Asian Senior Fencing Championships are anticipated to involve competitors from over thirty countries across Asia and Oceania. The event is expected to draw nearly one hundred delegates and technical officials, making it one of the largest fencing competitions that India has ever hosted.

In addition to the championships, the event will coincide with the General Assembly of the Fencing Confederation of Asia (FCA). This will mark the first occasion that the leadership of the FCA convenes in India, offering a substantial platform for discussions on the sport’s development in the region. Interim President of the International Fencing Federation (FIE), Abdelmoneim El Husseiny, is also expected to attend the assembly.

Despite the disappointment regarding Pakistan’s non-participation, the championships hold significance for India, as they aim to enhance the country’s image as a host of prominent international sports events. The anticipation surrounding this competition is expected to inspire upcoming fencing athletes in India and promote growth within the sport.

Visa Challenges for Other Delegations

Although the preparations for the championships are on track, organisers have encountered some visa-related hurdles affecting certain participating nations. FAI’s Secretary General stated that while overall arrangements are progressing smoothly, assistance is being coordinated with national and international authorities to ensure high standards for the event.

A specific challenge has arisen for delegates from Hong Kong, who are experiencing delays in obtaining timely visa appointments due to limited availability at the visa application centre. Moreover, the Australian delegation is dealing with complications after several of their visa applications were rejected. Coordination efforts are actively underway to resolve these issues and facilitate their participation.

Organisers remain hopeful that these challenges will be successfully navigated, ensuring the championships not only proceed as planned but also enhance the profile of fencing in India. Mehta expressed optimism that the event will serve as a catalyst for inspiring young athletes and strengthening the nation’s standing in hosting international sporting events.
