Pakistan Faces Global Scrutiny at UNHRC Over Balochistan Rights Abuses

The CSR Journal Magazine

In Geneva, Switzerland, members of the Baloch National Movement (BNM) organized a protest rally in conjunction with the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), bringing attention to alleged human rights violations occurring in Balochistan province, Pakistan.

The demonstration commenced at Parc des Cropettes and proceeded towards the Broken Chair Monument, a site prominent in global human rights activism. Participants carried placards, photographs, and banners that highlighted the ongoing issues of enforced disappearances, chanting slogans that called for justice and accountability.

The rally included women and families of allegedly missing individuals, who expressed grave concerns regarding what they characterized as a persistent trend of arbitrary detentions and disappearances in Balochistan. Many posters depicted missing persons alongside messages urging the international community to take action and to investigate what they described as genocide targeting Baloch youth and women.

Photo Exhibition Aims to Raise Awareness Among Diplomats

A photo exhibition held near the Broken Chair Monument aimed to further elevate these grave allegations. This exhibition featured portraits and personal narratives of missing individuals and their families, intending to humanize the plight of these victims to diplomats and other attendees at the UN session. Niaz Baloch, associated with the exhibition, asserted that it was developed to convey “the true picture of the human rights situation in Balochistan” to diplomats, citizens of Switzerland, and the broader international audience.

Baloch indicated that the awareness campaign will persist with plans for an international conference that will include experts, political figures, and human rights defenders to delve deeper into the pressing crisis in the region. This continuing effort seeks to maintain international focus on the situation.

Allegations of Systematic Rights Violations in Balochistan

Further asserting serious concerns about the human rights situation, Hakeem Baloch claimed that Balochistan is experiencing significant rights infringements, including enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings. He claimed that over 1,300 cases of abductions were documented within the past year alone, alleging that families of activists are being targeted to suppress opposition. Hakeem Baloch also accused Pakistani authorities of conducting “fake encounters,” stating that several individuals labeled as militants had previously been detained and were later killed.

These serious allegations have raised intense calls from within and outside the region for scrutiny and intervention from the international community, particularly focusing on the treatment of Baloch political activists and the ongoing violations of their rights.
