Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, who leads the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM), has submitted a formal complaint to the Hyderabad city police requesting criminal action against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. This action follows the emergence of a now-deleted video that purportedly shows Sarma aiming a firearm at individuals identified as Muslims. Owaisi took to social media platform X, expressing his concerns about the increasing prevalence of what he termed “genocidal hate speech.”
Details of the Allegations
In the complaint directed at the city’s police commissioner, Owaisi articulated that Sarma has made numerous public statements targeting the Muslim community over the years through various media channels. He asserted that these remarks have become notably more frequent in recent months, suggesting an intention to inflame religious sentiments among Muslims and to foster discord between different religious groups.
The complaint specifically references a video posted on February 7, 2026, by the Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which was removed the following day. Despite its deletion, Owaisi indicated that the video continues to circulate on various social media platforms. According to his allegations, the imagery in the video presents Sarma with a weapon, aiming it at individuals depicted as Muslims, and includes aggressive slogans such as “Point blank shot” and “No Mercy.”
Impact of the Video
Owaisi contended that the video and its accompanying language exemplify a “deliberate and malicious act” aimed at provoking communal hatred and inciting violence. He highlighted that he had viewed the video within the jurisdiction of the Hyderabad police, thereby establishing the appropriate legal jurisdiction for the complaint.
Citing Legal Precedents
In his formal notice, Owaisi referred to a Supreme Court ruling in the case of Shaheen Abdulla v. Union of India & Ors. This judgment directed law enforcement agencies to take immediate action in instances of hate speech, emphasizing that failure to do so would be a violation of their constitutional responsibilities. Owaisi called upon the authorities to take swift legal measures against the Assam Chief Minister, implying that such a step is necessary to uphold the law and ensure communal harmony.
