Five Drinks That May Alleviate Constipation

The CSR Journal Magazine

Constipation is a prevalent issue that can lead to discomfort and unease during daily activities. It occurs when bowel movements are infrequent or difficult, prompting individuals to seek effective solutions for relief. While maintaining adequate hydration, consuming fibre-rich foods, and engaging in physical activity are essential for facilitating digestion, the incorporation of certain beverages can also assist in promoting regular bowel movements.

Gastroenterologist Dr Saurabh Sethi has highlighted five beverages that may provide relief for those experiencing constipation. These drinks range from well-known options like coffee and green tea to fermented beverages, fruit juices, and a chia seed drink. However, it is important to note that the effectiveness of these drinks can vary among individuals, and some may need to be consumed cautiously.

Exploring Recommended Beverages for Digestive Health

Black coffee and green tea are two recommended drinks due to their caffeine content, which may stimulate the gastrocolic reflex. This natural bodily response can enhance colon activity and potentially encourage the urge to defecate. Nevertheless, moderation is crucial, as excessive caffeine consumption can lead to issues such as acidity, restlessness, or dehydration for some people.

Another beneficial option is a kefir and berry smoothie. Kefir is a fermented dairy product rich in probiotics, which contribute positively to digestive health. Dr Sethi suggests incorporating additional ingredients such as psyllium, flax seeds, or hemp seeds into this smoothie. These additions are high in fibre and may support regular bowel movements, resulting in better overall digestive function.

Warm herbal tea is also suggested as a digestive aid. Certain herbal teas may contain senna, a natural laxative that can stimulate bowel movements. It is essential to utilise senna only for short-term relief and consult a healthcare professional before using it regularly.

Fruit Juices and Alternative Options for Relief

Fruit juices like prune, pear, and apple juice contain sorbitol, a sugar alcohol known to assist in relieving constipation. Dr Sethi recommends consuming fresh juices without any added sugars to maximise their benefits. He advises moderation, suggesting that small quantities are more effective than consuming large amounts at once.

A creative drink option is chia fresca, which involves soaking chia seeds in water. To prepare this drink, one spoonful of chia seeds should be mixed with a glass of water, along with slices of cucumber and mint for added flavour. After letting the mixture sit for approximately 10 to 15 minutes, it can be consumed, optionally with a splash of lemon juice. This drink not only hydrates but also supplies beneficial nutrients for digestion.

While these beverages may aid in digestion and bowel movements, they are not definitive solutions for constipation. Individuals should also prioritise their overall daily habits, including adequate fluid intake, a fibre-rich diet, and regular physical activity. It is crucial to avoid relying on laxative-containing drinks, particularly those with senna, without the guidance of a medical professional.

When to Seek Professional Advice

Should constipation persist, worsen, or frequently recur, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider rather than repeatedly attempting home remedies. Understanding the underlying causes of constipation is essential for determining the appropriate approach to treatment. Proper medical guidance will facilitate effective management of this common digestive issue.
