Over 2,000 Evacuated in Maharashtra After Oleum Gas Leak at Boisar Chemical Facility

The CSR Journal Magazine

On Monday, more than 2,000 individuals, including 1,600 students, were evacuated from the Boisar area of Palghar district in Maharashtra following a significant leak of oleum gas from a chemical facility. The leak, which occurred at approximately 2 PM at Bhageria Industries Ltd, led to the release of dense white fumes over a radius of five kilometers, as confirmed by local officials.

Government Response

Dr. Indu Rani Jakhar, the district collector overseeing the situation, stated that the district’s disaster management plan was activated immediately to address the leak. She emphasized the importance of following official guidance and urged the community to remain indoors, cautioning against spreading rumors. “The situation is being constantly monitored in coordination with all departments concerned,” Dr. Jakhar noted.

Community Safety Measures

Superintendent of Police Yatish Deshmukh reassured residents that authorities are working diligently to manage the crisis. He advised local inhabitants to avoid panic and to move away from the affected area. The smoke cloud was reported to be drifting over Boisar, prompting the decision to evacuate residents in its path. The area has been sealed off for safety reasons. Deshmukh mentioned, “Citizens are requested to move in the opposite direction of the wind and smoke and proceed to a safe location.”

Health Impact and Evacuations

According to preliminary reports from authorities, three individuals experienced minor eye irritation; however, no serious injuries were documented. The district administration noted that the gas leak originated from a 2,500-liter oleum tank, releasing dangerous fumes that were rapidly dispersed due to strong winds. Consequently, over 1,000 factory workers and numerous students from a nearby school were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Emergency Operations

Emergency response teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), and the Fire Brigade were dispatched to manage the situation. Initial efforts to access the source of the leak were hindered by the high concentration of smoke. As stated in an official release, the teams encountered significant challenges in reaching the precise location of the leak.

Containment Efforts

Once the teams accessed the site, chemical experts and NDRF personnel, equipped with self-contained breathing apparatus, successfully identified the leak. They utilized sandbags around the tank to mitigate the emission of fumes. Local authorities confirmed that investigations into the cause of the leak are currently underway.

Air Quality Monitoring

The Palghar administration continues to conduct air quality assessments and has assured residents that there is no immediate threat to their safety. Dr. Jakhar indicated that coordinated efforts across various departments are ongoing to fully contain the leak and prevent similar incidents in the future.
