OpenAI Partners IIT Delhi, IIM Ahmedabad, AIIMS And Others To Build AI-Ready Campuses In India

The CSR Journal Magazine

OpenAI has announced deep institutional partnerships with six leading Indian universities and three major edtech platforms, signalling a shift from individual use of artificial intelligence tools to large-scale deployment across campuses aimed at preparing an AI-ready workforce.

The first group of partner institutions includes IIT Delhi, IIM Ahmedabad, AIIMS New Delhi, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies and Pearl Academy. Together, the initiative is expected to support more than one lakh students, faculty members and staff over the next year through structured access to enterprise-grade ChatGPT Edu, faculty training programmes and responsible-use frameworks.

Unlike earlier collaborations centred on providing standalone tools, the new effort focuses on institutional transformation. OpenAI said AI will be embedded across teaching, research, evaluation and campus operations while maintaining academic integrity and ethical safeguards.

Raghav Gupta, head of education at OpenAI India, said the move reflects the scale of change expected in the global job market. “By 2030, nearly 40% of core skills workers rely on today will change, driven largely by AI. Educational institutions are critical to bridging the gap between what AI tools can do and how people actually use them,” he said.

AI Integration Across Disciplines

Each participating institution will deploy AI in ways tailored to its academic strengths.

At IIT Delhi, the collaboration will focus on engineering innovation, integrating AI across undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and executive programmes. Hackathons and industry engagement initiatives supported by OpenAI are expected to link student projects with India’s manufacturing, deep-technology and research ecosystem.

IIM Ahmedabad plans to deploy ChatGPT Edu across its management courses, embedding AI fluency into areas such as strategy, finance, operations, public policy and entrepreneurship.

AIIMS New Delhi will explore applications in medical education and clinical training, including a proposed AI in Medical Education Hub. The initiative will focus on simulations, clinical documentation and evidence synthesis, with an emphasis on safety standards and ethical deployment in healthcare settings.

Manipal Academy of Higher Education will adopt a multidisciplinary approach spanning engineering, health sciences, business and hospitality. Meanwhile, UPES will focus on applications in engineering, law and health sciences, and Pearl Academy will emphasise creative sectors such as design, fashion technology and digital media.

Certifications And Edtech Partnerships

Beyond campus integration, the programme will introduce structured certification pathways. IIM Ahmedabad and MAHE plan to offer OpenAI certifications to formalise AI skill development in management and multidisciplinary education.

To expand access beyond universities, OpenAI has also partnered with edtech platforms PhysicsWallah, upGrad and HCL GUVI. These collaborations aim to deliver courses on AI fundamentals and practical ChatGPT usage for students and early-career professionals across the country.

The initiative reflects a broader evolution in India’s higher education system, moving from basic awareness of artificial intelligence to institutional adoption at scale. By embedding AI into curricula, research and administrative processes, universities are positioning graduates not only as users of AI tools but as contributors to an emerging AI-driven economy.

As global competition intensifies in advanced technologies, the programme underscores India’s ambition to develop a large pool of skilled talent capable of shaping the next phase of digital transformation rather than merely consuming it.
