OpenAI Launches ChatGPT for Teens With Enhanced Safeguards

The CSR Journal Magazine

OpenAI has released a dedicated version of its renowned AI chatbot, ChatGPT for Teens, aimed at users aged between 13 and 17. The company reports that this new version retains the core functionalities of general ChatGPT, but includes specific “age-appropriate safeguards” to limit exposure to potentially harmful or unsuitable content. The initiative reflects OpenAI’s commitment to creating a safer digital environment for young users, balancing the need for exploration and learning with appropriate content restrictions.

Key Differences from Standard ChatGPT

ChatGPT for Teens introduces several significant modifications compared to the standard version. According to OpenAI, this variant features enhanced protection mechanisms regarding self-harm, eating disorders, violence, dangerous behaviours, and inappropriate sexual or graphic content. Furthermore, the chatbot is designed to offer less human-like responses; it will avoid romantic language and terms of endearment. OpenAI has placed stricter guidelines to ensure the chatbot does not imply it possesses feelings, consciousness, or emotions.

The launch comes in light of recent challenges faced by OpenAI, including lawsuits from parents alleging that the original ChatGPT could have harmful effects on minors. For instance, in June 2026, the state of Florida initiated legal action against the company after claims that ChatGPT provided inappropriate information to teenagers, contributing to instances of self-harm and violent behaviour.

Educational Features and Responsible Usage

OpenAI emphasises the educational aspect of ChatGPT for Teens, which aims to encourage genuine learning rather than merely copying answers. This version includes features like Study Mode, learning-focused prompts, and quizzes to enhance the educational experience. Additionally, homework reminders are integrated to guide users through their assignments step by step, promoting a deeper understanding of the material.

Account linkage for teens and their guardians allows setting specific Study Hours, during which interactions will default to Study Mode, and Quiet Hours, restricting access to the chatbot during particular times. Furthermore, reminders designed to ensure a balanced usage pattern will alert users after they have been engaged for extended periods, alongside notifications that they are communicating with an AI system.

ChatGPT for Teens also includes warnings when users attempt to upload potentially sensitive images, further enhancing the safety measures in place for young users. These features are intended to cultivate a more constructive and responsible approach to technology usage among teenagers.

Automatic Application of Teen Features

OpenAI reports that the experience of using ChatGPT for Teens will automatically be assigned to users indicating they are under 18 during sign-up. Additionally, an age-prediction system will further customise access for those estimated to be under the legal adult age. This proactive approach aims to reinforce age-appropriate engagement with the platform.

The prevalence of AI chatbots among teenagers is notable, as highlighted in a report by the Pew Research Center in December. The study found that nearly one-third of teenagers utilise AI chatbots daily, with ChatGPT being the most popular choice among them. This growing trend underlines the importance of age-specific adaptations in technology to foster safe and healthy online habits.
