Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has declared that the state will address the shortage of teachers by filling 45,000 vacant positions in schools over the next three years. This announcement took place during a Teachers’ Day celebration held at Secondary Board High School in Cuttack on Saturday. Majhi emphasised the significant role of educators in society as well as the importance of education reforms.

At the event, the Chief Minister specifically noted the necessity of effective teaching in moulding the future of students and shaping their educational experiences. He stated, “The state government will fill up 45,000 teaching vacancies in schools across the state over the next three years,” highlighting the administration’s commitment to enhancing the educational landscape in Odisha.

Focus on Student Development

During his address, Majhi, who has a background in teaching prior to his political career, encouraged students to limit their time spent on social media. He urged them to prioritise their education and personal development. “Please do not waste too much time on social media, and instead focus on building careers,” he advised, underscoring the need for students to cultivate strong academic skills.

Furthermore, Majhi articulated that education should extend beyond mere knowledge transmission. He expressed that it is vital for shaping individuals who can contribute effectively to society and foster national progress. This perspective aligns with the state’s broader educational objectives.

In his discussions, the Chief Minister also reiterated the accountability that students have towards their own futures as well as the nation’s advancement, positioning education as a cornerstone of sustainable development.

Innovations in the Education Sector

Majhi outlined several initiatives that his government has implemented to enhance education in Odisha. One notable programme is the ‘KG to PG’ free education scheme, which purportedly makes Odisha the first state in India to provide this level of financial support for education. He mentioned that the government is investing Rs 12,000 crore to establish 2,200 Godavarish Mishra Adarsha Pratamika Vidyalayas, providing access to basic education across the region.

In addition to the establishment of primary schools, he announced the opening of 45,000 nursery schools aimed at pre-school children, further expanding the educational framework within the state. The Chief Minister also touched on plans to supply mid-day meals and textbooks to students in Classes 9 and 10, which will support their academic efforts.

Another significant initiative referenced by Majhi is the Shahid Madho Singh Hath Kharcha Yojana, designed to assist tribal students in their educational journeys and reduce dropout rates amongst this demographic, contributing to a more inclusive educational environment.

Celebrating Teachers’ Contributions

The Teachers’ Day event coincided with the birth anniversary of former President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, commemorated as National Teachers’ Day. In his comments, Majhi celebrated the traditional Guru-Shishya relationship, acknowledging the critical role that teachers have played in shaping illustrious personalities throughout history.

Referencing former President APJ Abdul Kalam, Majhi pointed out that even in his esteemed position, Kalam always took pride in his identity as a teacher. The Chief Minister took the opportunity to honour outstanding educators during the celebration, combining the recognition of teachers with the announcement of the government’s forthcoming education initiatives.
