Nepal SC Orders Release of KP Sharma Oli, Ramesh Lekhak by April 9

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Supreme Court of Nepal has mandated the release of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak by April 9. This order was confirmed through court documents issued on Monday. The court dismissed habeas corpus petitions filed on behalf of both leaders, which were submitted by their spouses, Radhika Shakya and Yashoda Lekhak, respectively.

Background of Detention

Oli and Lekhak were apprehended last month in connection with casualties that arose during protests on September 8 and 9, 2025, known as the Gen-Z protests. A joint bench consisting of Justices Binod Sharma and Sunil Kumar Pokharel rejected the petitions for their release on Monday. Following this decision, the court instructed the government to facilitate the release of both individuals once their current five-day remand extension concludes on April 9.

Details of Remand Extension

Prior to this order, the Kathmandu District Court had prolonged their remand for the third time, granting an additional five days effective from April 5, 2023. This period will come to an end on April 9, allowing for their scheduled release.

Ongoing Protests and Allegations

Protests advocating for the release of Oli have been ongoing across Nepal. Supporters and members of Oli’s political party have called for an unbiased investigation into the circumstances surrounding the protests. They have criticized a report prepared under the leadership of former Judge Gauri Bahadur Karki, alleging it to be partial. The party has also demanded an equitable probe into incidents of vandalism, arson, and looting that took place during the protests, along with calls for legal action against those responsible.

Accusations Against Oli and Lekhak

The government has filed homicide charges against Oli and Lekhak linked to fatalities reported during the protests, justifying their detention for further investigation. Currently, Oli is receiving medical care at a hospital due to several health issues, including irregular heart palpitations. His medical history records two kidney transplants.
